  • "Space Fantasy" Opens at Universal Studios Japan

The new spinning coaster has opened at USJ. It looks really neat and retro, especially the line. The Facade is pretty cool looking too. Judging by the wait time in the 2nd video, the ride seams to be a huge hit!

    A promotional video by USJ:

    The line and exterior area:

    The ride:

Does anybody else get a Super Mario Galaxy vibe here?

^It took over E.T. but I'm not sure if they used its showbuilding or built a new one.
      Wow the ride looks great.
Nice replacement for their E.T. ride, I'd would of rather gotten this then USH version of the Mummy.
Does remind me of Super Mario Galaxy as well! I got to find that game haha.

We were sent over there with the message that only we would defend Disney quality.. We learnt quickly that the Japanese culture speaks to a level of quality that is hard to comprehend. They were all unbelievably skilled and willing to do the right thing.

I love how Universal keeps on insisting on calling everything "The Ride" in the title of every attraction.

But it looks pretty cool. I wouldn't mind that taking the place of ET in Orlando (the only ET left!).

That looks really cool. Glad they created a (seemingly) new theme and didn't copy it from an existing movie or TV franchise (unless it's a japanese franchise).

Wouldn't be surprised if it's based on some Japan-exclusive kids show.

The ride was built inside the old ET Adventure building. Only the exterior entrance got a new facade, and NO, it's not based on any kids tv show from Japan. The ride's storyline is about guests traveling from the Earth to save the Sun, with is dying.. or something like that. (Yet another conservation theme for USJ, following the steps of their disastrous daily show in front of that ride...can't remember the name of the street show now..)

The high points.. the queue is really nice and the fiber optic 3d starfield is wow! So are some of the other special effects seen around the ride. Queue and ride effects alone put the Space Mountains of the World to bloody shame, and makes the MK version look like the old albatross it really is, even after the refurbishing it just got. *sighs* we get so royally ripped off at our domestic Disney parks in FL at times. I also like the onboard soundtrack that matches the ride.

The low points are the coaster's speed itself, which slows down considerably at times to allow guests to enjoy the storyline as told by the main character during the ride. The spinning is not as bad or nauseating as WDSP's Crush Coaster, so that was a better deal for me personally. Just like Crush's Coaster, guests are paired in two, some facing forward and some facing aft, as they exit or re-enter the boarding area. The ride itself can be a bit rough at times and I suspect that is because the coaster is a retrofitted "off the shelf" coaster.. just likie DAK's Primeval Whirl... and some others like DLP/TDS' Indy/raging Spirit rides.

Do yourself a favor... get Universal's Express pass to go straight for the ride. The wait time for the coaster this past weekend exceeded 2 hours on stand by. Saving grace is.. like Disney's omnimovers, the vehicles move along side the belt, so guests can get on and off as the vehicles advance, without stopping. That helps move the line .. as long as technical difficulties shut the ride down.

My rating.. 4 stars out of 5.

I would. E.T. is a classic and USF already has an indoor coaster. Besides, this specific attraction is obviously meant for a Japanese audience. It wouldn't work here.

I wish they would have gotten an updated version of ET, a film which is such an important part of Universal's heritage, but...

...the effects do look fabulous. The interactive elements of the queue are so fresh and vibrant...where those from the MK's recent refurb look like 80s video games. I guess the slower pace means a less thrilling ride than the Space Mountains...but more time to see all the great props and effects.

From the pics and videos the ride is certainly very impressive, that star field alone puts any space themed coaster to shame.

Though I can firmly say it's a custom layout and not an off the shelf layout, mainly due to the coaster being in a pre-existing building and Mack doesn't have a off the shelf layout for a spinning coaster that has sections where the cars are controlled.
Disney and Universal fan for life!...Shocking ain't it?
