  • Rip Rocket failure

    I'm at Universal in Florida and noticed that Rip Rocket was'nt running, so I went over to the ride and noticed a bunch of cast members in the park that has a great view of the coaster. Then I saw a coaster car sitting at the BOTTOM of the part after the loop! It did'nt make it to the top of the hill and went backwards! I started to take a picture, then a CM came running over screaming for me to stop. So, I figured this must be pretty bad and encouraged me to post from the park. I'll post picture if my phone will allow it.

    Yikes. Hope nobody was hurt. Thanks for keeping us updated.
    As nice as the other parks are, we must always remember that it all began at Disneyland. Disneyland should be the crown jewel in the Disney crown.

      Just a rollback, probably due to winds. Nothing to worry about, it happens to rollercoasters all the time.. it was a common occurrence when the Rockit was testing.

        Just a rollback? I didn't think that was too common. How do they get the car out of there? No chains or cables to get it out of there. My phone won't post pictures with the editor. I can send via email if someone can post for me. Thx!

          It's very common, especially with Rip Ride. During testing rollbacks happened daily, that's why they sped the chain up so fast. Not really a big deal.

            They use a crane to pull the car to the top of the hill. It goes through the rest of the course as usual.

            As the others have said, this isn't a big deal, although it does seem to happen pretty frequently on this specific ride. I think the designers made the 2nd hill too tall.

              For something that occurs often, they were very protective of any pictures that anyone was trying to make. I can't imagine the fear of everyone on that car almost making to the top of the hill, then going backwards midway up a twisting loop, then repeating back and forth until it stopped. If it occurs often, I would call that a design flaw.

                Not a big deal? I would call it a major design flaw.

                    A rollback should be very uncommon. It should only be caused by extreme weather conditions. I have spent a great deal of time in amusement parks and have only seen this happen on top thrill dragster at cedar point. The problem with Rip Ride Rocket is that it is very similar to a wild mouse. Because it has small trains it has to operate with a bunch of trains on the track at one time. To do this safely, there are several brake sections throughout the ride. A train is only allowed to enter a section of the track after the previous train has cleared that section. This means that trains have to be able to be brought to a complete stop several places along the track. This makes for a ride that is constantly slowing down. I think this makes it a pretty bad coaster, it just never builds much momentum. I would also guess this has something to do with the roll back problem. I am sure they really have to control the speed of the train so that they can safely bring it to a complete stop at the beginning of each brake section. I was extremely disappointed when I rhode this coaster for the first time last month. I hope they can fix it but I have my doubts.

                      A roll back is not bad at all. I have been on plenty of rides where you can't get up a hill. Once I was alone on a whoody and couldn't get up a meager hill. Also, Rip Ride Rocket is not a failure, it has huge lines and looks amazing at night. Although I would like more themeing, it still is a great ride.
