  • Fire at Universal today

Happened to be driving by Universal today to get some lunch around noon. One of the studio buildings that faces Lankershim had smoke pouring out of the roof area. We got lunch at a food truck nearby (Grill Em All!) and by the time we finsihed eating, the LAFD had responded and no more smoke was visible. I thought I'd see it mentioned on the LATimes or something (at least one news helicopter was above), but I havnt heard any news. I snapped a couple photos.. will upload at home later.

Here is a blurb in the Times:

Fire breaks out at Universal Studios backlot in Universal City - latimes.com

Whatever building it was CNN reported that it was in the process of being demolished.

I know which building it was. There are two gutted buildings right where Lankershim splits. It was one of the buildings in the red oval. For perspective, the tram route is green.

Here's a photo I took that day. This was about as smokey as I saw it get.

They sure have a lot of fires at Universal Studios. Funny how it's always some old thing that conveniently frees up space for expansion or upgrading.

Thanks for the pic! Man, that place sure does catch fire a lot.

Yeah. I did a bunch of pictures the day that big fire happened in 2008, and some of the rebuilding:

I was there that day. I got on the tram tour just before noon. I remember seeing a low flying helicopter, but I never saw any smoke. When the tour went by the CSI soundstages it went into quiet mode. The guide explained that they were taping in the soundstage, but I wonder if the fire had anything to do with the quiet mode.

The Technicolor Buildings were slated for demolition and were already gutted before the fire.

It was because of the filming. The soundstages are not completely soundproof. The helicopter wouldn't be picked up by the recording equipment but the tour guide on the mic would.
