I paid a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood last Saturday to take in the Grinchmas 2012 offerings. Some photos are below:

Upon entering the park, you may encounter some Whos from Whoville for photo opportunities.

They all have unique personalities which make for fun meet and greets.

I then went straight to the tram tour so I could see the Whoville on the Backlot show.

The Whoville show is a very cute 2 min. stop during the tram tour and a terrific seasonal addition to Universal Studios!

Late in the afternoon, I queued up for the very popular Tree Lighting ceremony. These pics were from the 3rd show with celebrity reader, Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser, Days of our Lives).

"...and the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day."

I love the very large, very whimsical Whoville tree and this show! They don't call it a "Tree Lighting" for nothing!

Overall, I really enjoy the Grinchmas promotion at Universal Studios. During the day, you can play in real snow in The Grinch's Winter Playground--which is the same location for the Tree Lighting ceremony. If playing in the snow is important to your family, make sure to get there early enough in the day. Last Saturday, the Winter Playground closed at 3:30pm, so they could prep the area for the first Tree Lighting ceremony. The times may vary from day-to-day, but they will always need time to switch from Playground to show mode.

And there is a lot of other entertainment that is unique to the Christmas season in Universal Studios: various buskers on Baker Street, Mrs. Claus and the Santa Dolls, and of course, Christmas Carolers. All of the above made for a really wonderful day in the park!

Is the tree lighting the same as in years past? (Aside from the readers of course)

Yes, the Tree Lighting is pretty much the same show as the previous two years, and just as enjoyable.

The Tree Lighting ceremony is located on the Upper Lot, in the same venue as the Grinch's Winter Playground. This area used to hold the Wild Wild Wild West Stunt Show many years ago. You can't miss it. During the day, it's a play area with real snow. And the 60ft tree is quite the landmark.

We had a very nice time at Universal yesterday!

The Grinchmas tree lighting ceremony was entertaining,
we had fun tossing snowballs (underhand, but with lots of good-natured trash talking),
there were at least a dozen nice Whos mingling around all day and night,
and Universal sold nice silver thermoses with the Universal logo filled with hot chocolate for $6, with $1 refills for the rest of the day.

              Now to get off track:ot::
I was impressed with the professionalism of the monsters inside the House of Horrors.
I was a bad parent and let my intrepid daughter, 7, talk me into going in with her, but almost all of the monsters were friendly to her and she loved it and insisted on going back in for a second time immediately.

Don't forget that L.A. area Costcos have great deals on Universal passes. Currently an AP is $69.

Another off-track tip: Leave the park for lunch or dinner for either Karl Strauss or Bubba Gump in Universal City Walk. The shrimp at Bubba's are overpriced and really unhealthy, but they have outstanding waiters, a tasty mushroom burger, and they substituted generous steamed veggie side orders for fries.

It turned out to be a pretty decent trip. We rode what we wanted and got the 2013 AP's so we can return to do the rest. Also saw the Grinchmas tree lighting.

                      Had a great time!

Your daughter is awesome. I'm 18 and still haven't been in it.
