  • Halloween Horror Nights VIP...Worth it?

We are considering doing the VIP for Halloween Nights 2014. We have never done HHN, so we really have no idea what to expect, even with just the regular admission.

The website states that you get unlimited front of the line to all mazes and rides, dinner, and the Terror Tram (not sure what that is though.) We are considering going on October 16th.

We would love to hear any feed back from other people that might have attended a HHN VIP.

    Thanks so much!

    As to the event itself...

It's a fairly upscale "haunt" style event with built up walkthrough "mazes". If you've ever been to one of Knott's events (or Cedar Fairs' events of late from what I hear) you'll have some idea what to expect. The Terror Tram is a little... weird. It's the normal studio tour trams hauling crowds out into the backlot for a walkthrough outdoor Walking Dead experience culminating in a photo op in front of the Psycho House and a walkthrough of the War of the Worlds set plus zombies.

As to the VIP, I went VIP last year.

It looks like they're not doing a few things that were part of last year's experience. The VIP escort included a stop and walking section through the backlot culminating with "The Insidious Experience" scare scene.

Beyond that, I enjoyed it greatly. The front of line access is better than the usual sold at the gates (which only gives you a single trip), and the lounge is usually pretty mellow and supplied better than average food for the entirety of the evening. Even if just to stop in and grab a complimentary soda when we were in the area, it was much appreciated.

The VIP parking is nice. The separate entrance...? Eh, depends on why you're there. Going through the VIP entrance means you miss the opening chainsaw rush if you're there at rope drop, but they also had a nice little lounge with cold water and a Uni monster documentary to watch while you waited for your VIP tram to the mazes.

I'm a little sad they cut the backstage walking section out, but would still generally recommend the VIP experience.

BogLurch summed it up pretty nicely.

I've never experienced the VIP during Horror Nights, but I have done the normal VIP tour at Universal - something I would recommend as well if you are so inclined.

Thanks BogLurch and explodingboy... We have done the regular park VIP, and are actually doing it again the trip we have planned next month.... just wasn't sure what to expect with the HHN VIP, or even HHN in general. It sounds pretty epic, although I am really not a fan of being "jumped-out-at" scared... haha.. but my hub wants to go, so I am totally game to give it a try. It sounds like the effects are well worth it.

Thanks so much for your feedback!

Universal has some of the most amazing setwork out of any of the SoCal haunts. It hurts a bit to admit that - I grew up on Knott's Haunt, worked it a bit even, and while Knott's is good... let's face it, they're not a movie studio with an entire massive infrastructure dedicated to building amazing facades.

Since you've been to the park, if you've been through the (soon to be departing) House of Horrors you've been through a lighter version of the full maze experience. Jump scares are par for the course, unfortunately, but the shenanigans they get up to with set design are amazing and well worth the trip.

HHN is fantastic! I love the scary stuff. Have done the regular VIP tour, and it was great. I expect the HHN VIP will be great, too, and it has unlimited front-of-the-line, which is better than the regular one.

I did VIP last year and still saw the chainsaw opening. I think it is worth it, not much more than front of the line pass plus VIP includes food, 2 drinks, the private tram to the terror tram area, the backlot last year (hope they do it again), and they are advertising a VIP only attraction. Of course the unlimited frontsies. Doing it again this year, next saturday.

                Yep, this.

Personally, I think Universal trumps every other theme park Halloween attraction out of the water in terms of makeup and sets. You are literally walking into movies which is a cool aspect. That is not to knock Knott's Halloween Haunt or anything - their scareactors and mazes are great too. OP, you should YouTube some of last year's mazes at Horror Nights, just to give you an idea of what it's all about.

I'll be there this coming weekend with Front of the Line passes!

Speaking as someone who has never done it at HHN, and is subjected to the lines, I'd say it's worth it. Because about an hour after park opening, many of the lines for the major mazes will exceed 2 hours. That alone can make it worth it.

Plus, I've found that it's often quite fun going through the same maze more than once. Frequently, you'll catch a scene or effect from your first time going through.
Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

Re: Halloween Horror Nights VIP...Worth it?

Only way I go anymore. I have done VIP the last 4 years. It's a lot of money but we save up for it during the year. To me it really makes the event feel special. Last year we were able to go through each maze at least 2 times. The walking dead we went through 4 because we love the show and wanted to take in all the details and scenery. Being able to stroll through the park at your own pace is quite an incredible experience IMO. Also you can go on the rides as much as you want. Having access to the VIP lounge is nice for free sodas and water. The food is decent as well we haven't eaten dinner the past couple years just so we could take in the free food.

I say evaluate the cost versus being able to bypass all the lines. If you want to enjoy everything more than once it's the option for you.

Here is my trip report from lasts years event maybe this can give you an idea of how it went.

Thank you EVERYONE! The decision has been made, tickets have been purchased.... and I'm actually pretty excited. On the suggestion of explodingboy, I went and watched some videos. The staging areas look so elaborate.... I can't wait to see them.

We listen to Howard Stern, and one of the writers on his show, Richard Christy, goes to the one in Orlando every year. We have heard him talk about how great it is for years, but have never been in the area in September/October. This year, our vacation plans just happen to fall later in the year, so it's the perfect opportunity for us to check it out. I'm still a little nervous about people jumping at me, but I'll suck it up in exchange for the amazing staged areas, set designs, and elaborately made up actors I will get to see.

Cool! You'll have a good time. The scares are part of the fun.
