Surf City AIDS Ride Sunday 10/4

In just over a week, I'll be riding the 100 mile route in the Surf City AIDS ride. The event takes place October 4 near Santa Cruz and benefits the Santa Cruz AIDS Project. If you are a cyclist living near Santa Cruz, consider signing up. There are shorter routes of 25 and 60 miles, if 100 is too far for you. I have ridden this route before (in reverse), and I can tell you it's one of the most varied and beautiful routes I have done on a bike.

I've already paid my registration, so I'm not asking money for myself, or even to give myself credit. You can donate at the site yourself, whether or not you ride, and only you and SCAP will know.

It's been three years since I've ridden 100 miles in a single day. I've been going strong on rides of 30 to 70 miles, so 100 is within my capability.

There is a connection between the first time I did this ride in 2005 and my joining MiceChat. So I think it's only right to let my friends at MiceChat know that I'm doing it again this year.

Click on the link in the title at the top to register, donate, or just read more about the ride.
Have bicycle, will ride. Finished 2012 with 10,089 miles, 683 hours, and 482,000 feet of elevation gain.
    2013: 201 rides, 8171 miles, 544 hours, 480K feet.
    2014 so far: 7846 miles, 451,000 feet

Re: Surf City AIDS Ride 10/4

What an awesome thing and for a great cause. I rode in the California AIDS Ride for many years right after it first started in 1994 (7 days, 525 miles from S.F. to L.A.). It has now evolved into the AIDS/LifeCycle and still happens every June.

The last time I did the ride was 2003... I miss riding and I have been meaning to pick up the old bike again.

    Good luck Trekkie Dad!

Two days to go! I have a long, tough ride ahead of me today, and then I'm taking it easy tomorrow, so I'll be fresh for the century.

Re: Surf City AIDS Ride 10/4

I got an email today from the organizers. It has a link, in case you care to participate or donate:

To all Surf City AIDS Ride Participants,

Thanks so much for registering for the Surf City AIDS Ride! Your registration is confirmed, and we look forward to seeing you on October 4th.

It's going to be a great ride! This year's Surf City has improved routes, expanded ocean views, a catered lunch, and live music along the way to help you pedal on up those hills.

There's room for more cyclists on the road -- and the Santa Cruz AIDS Project needs all the support it can get! The California budget crisis has resulted in overwhelming cuts to HIV/AIDS funding across the state. We are keeping the faith, and working hard to maintain services for our clients during these difficult times. And...The more successful Surf City is this year, the better we are able to do this.

Please forward this email on to anyone who might be interested in joining us for the ride on October 4th. Talk them into signing up! Further information on Surf City -- along with details on how to register can be found here: Surf City AIDS Ride

Thanks again for your support -- we'll see you October 4th!!

Also, thank you to everyone who has been fund raising! And, for those of you who are interested, it is never to late to start. Send an e-mail to potential donors with a link to the website, Surf City AIDS Ride, and tell them to click on the 'DONATE' button. There is no deadline, and people are welcome to keep donating after the event is over. The Santa Cruz AIDS Project thanks you!

Re: Surf City AIDS Ride 10/4

I finished the ride in just under eight hours, including rest stops and lunch. It started out chilly, but the rest of the day the weather was near perfect.
