  • It Doesn't Matterhorn's 2016 Gumball Rally Trip Report

(Okay, I am having real troubles with this post. For some reason it doesn’t want to go through. Many apologies if this is a duplicate, but I really want to get these photos up for all to see!)

We're now home from the amazing 10th anniversary Gumball Rally and all the photos have been download to my computer now, so it's time for a trip report!

As usual, the event started off in the ESPN Zone. It was great to see old friends and make new ones! We also liked the group photo taken at the start of the Rally - it meant everyone was there, even all the staffers!

After the photo, we chose our booklet and headed into the park.

We started with the Tomorrowland booklet, because we wanted to get Adventureland and Critter Country done while there weren't many people in the park yet. Several other teams obviously had the same idea! It was a cloudy and chilly morning, but we still saw a bunch of teams taking advantage of Splash Mountain being a walk-on that early in the day.

(Yes, that's her camera and not her phone. I checked. )

We then made our way to Main Street, finishing up the areas we passed through as we got there. We saw Team My Neighbor Vader at the New Orleans train station (sorry, no photos), and then snapped a couple more photos along the way.

After getting a fast pass, one of our first rides in Tomorrowland was Buzz. You may have seen photo evidence of us waiting in line as a part of the official Rally Results thread, but here's what I saw from my side of the camera:

We had lunch in Tomorrowland (yes, I know), cheering on the teams who passed us while we ate. Then we headed to the Launch Bay for character meet & greets. Stay tuned for those photos!

It was under Unapproved for some reason, but it's good to go. Great photos! Wish I'd been able to make it!

Thanks for fixing it! I have no idea what I did to make it unapproved, unless there were too many photo links...

EDIT: Yup, it was too many photo links. The first time I tried to reply with additional photos, I had a lot of links (similar to the number of the original post) and it showed up as unapproved. I re-posted just the first three photos, and it went through. Mystery solved!

We really enjoyed the character meet and greets for this year’s Rally. We’d never done the Star Wars character experiences before, so this was a treat! We’re just lucky that one member of the team was paying attention to the question, because most of us were too absorbed with the characters to remember why we were there in the first place. (Kylo Ren made it REALLY EASY to forget about the Rally. Such a great experience.)

First up, we found Team Powered By Pixie Dust in line for the light side meet & greet. We decided it would be fun to take our picture together, so we all went to meet Chewie as one big group. (He gives the best hugs.)

After meeting Chewie and coming to an agreement on the number of crates, we went our separate ways. Team It Doesn’t Matterhorn swung by the First Order’s neighborhood next to meet Kylo Ren.

(I got in trouble for being a Rebel sympathizer. Oops.)

        (Yup. There. Are. FOUR. Lights.)

We had skipped the princess meet & greet when we did the rest of Main Street, but decided that we had just enough time to do that before our Hyperspace Mountain fast passes came up.

After that, it was time for Hyperspace Mountain, a packet swap, and then straight to Big Thunder Mountain (which we also had fast passes for, due to a long return time for Space). Once we finished up Frontierland, it was over to Toon Town, where we got a new fast pass for the Car Toon Spin and ran into a whole bunch more Gumball Rally teams. Those photos will be in the next post…

Toon Town was the place to be when we got there in the afternoon! There were Rally teams everywhere… especially in Goofy’s House…

Well, okay. We saw lots of teams at Gadget’s Go Coaster, too. (And pretty much everywhere else we turned in Toon Town…)

(I got a picture of Team My Neighbor Vader this time! They might not have been aware of it, but there they are!)

(You may have gotten the idea by now that I don’t do thrill rides. This is true when speed and comfort are important, anyway. Stupid vertigo. I did at least feel well enough to ride Hyperspace Mountain this year, but that knocked out most of the other fast attractions.)

After Toon Town, we finished up the day in Fantasyland. Our first stop there was Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, where we saw the Button Band on the Carousel and caught another glimpse of a MiceChat photographer.

Several teams were with us in line for Toad, too!

Part-way through our tour of Fantasyland, we realized that the parade was almost over. We headed for the Storybook Boats, where the Gumball Rally teams in the know were first in line when the ride opened back up after the parade.

One of our next stops after the boats was Dumbo! The 30-minute line, plus all the twists and turns in the queue, meant plenty of time to get photgraphs of the other teams in line.

We finished up what we could of Fantasyland after Dumbo, and then it was time to turn in the packet and head to the party - by way of Starbucks, of course! At the party, I got to meet an Imagineer (Terri), and we enjoyed the Match Game hosted by Monorail Man. Great Awards Party this year!

And that’s it for Gumball Rally 2016. Here’s to more fun at the 2017 Rally – we can’t wait!

Indeed it was! While many teams from prior years were not there we were glad so see so many familiar faces. AND especially pleased to meet so many new rally-ers. We hope to see you all again NEXT year!

This was a great trip report, Nikki! Thanks!!!

You're welcome, Dad! Also - thanks to my mom, who took a pictures of one of the My Neighbor Vader members at the NO train Station:

When the engineers saw us all reading the sign about the whistles, he offered to let us try it out! Tons of fun... but we all only stopped long enough for one person to blow the whistle. No time to all take a turn - there was a Rally to be run!

However, Team It Doesn't Matterhorn did take a little extra time in one location... we decided to take a picture with the Big Cheese, even though the packet specifically said we weren't required to! It is Mickey Mouse, after all. And I don't see him in his Steamboat Willie outfit that often, so it was a good choice.

(I forgot to include this picture up with the rest of the Toon Town ones. Oops!)
