  • Christie Hefner Compares Playboy to Disney; Oh the Irony

In an interview with financial website The Motley Fool, Playboy chairwoman and CEO Christie Hefner compares the adult entertainment conglomerate with family-friendly Disney.

Playboy and Disney are both brand-driven international entertainment companies; one is the premiere entertainment brand for adults and the other for children. Both companies also understand the value of "bringing the brand to life." Disney does that via its theme parks; we do it through multifaceted entertainment destinations that include gaming.
No mention was made of the recent revelation concerning HSM star Vanessa Hudgens. Much in common indeed.

Actually Hef has more in common with Pooh.

They both turned 80 last year, and both got a star on the
Walk of fame last year, too.

Playboy is NOT the premiere brand for adults. A certain kind of adult, yes, but I think the comparison is not quite accurate. Playboy is not something that (in a sense) comes into a specific phase in your life as Disney does.

I'm not saying it's blasphemy to make this comparison, I just don't think it's accutate at all the way she put it. If she had said, "Disney is the standard for children's entertainment and Playboy is the standard for it's own form of entertainment." I think just saying it's the media form for adults is incorrect. There are plenty of people who are adults that don't care for Playboy.....

I see her point, sort of. Its more of a brand philosophy than anything else. We may feel uncomfortable with the comparison (I don't, but some probably do), but as far as being a uniquely American brand marketed a certain way to the nth degree, then they are both pretty similar.
