and finally had the opportunity to see it yesterday, it's a pleasure to say it's a real triumph. Not only for director Ben Affleck but also for his great cast Amy Ryan, Michelle Monaghan, the great Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris and of course its center, Casey Affleck. What a year for him with this film following his wonderful work in 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.' Oscar nominations for either one would be truly fitting and well-deserved.
'Gone Baby Gone' comes from another book by Dennis Lehane, as did Clint Eastwood's Academy Award-winning 'Mystic River' with it's inside view of life in the tougher side of life outside of Boston. In last year's Best Picture winner, 'The Departed' we got to spend a great deal of time with the criminal side, in 'Gone Baby Gone' the line between the good guys and their counterparts is murky and easily clouded by childhood friendships, family bonds and the uglier sides of human nature.
The brothers Affleck know their old neighborhoods and their characters very well and everyone steps up their respective roles. It's a tough film and well-made on all fronts. It joins 'Zodiac', '3:10 to Yuma', 'Michael Clayton, 'Eastern Promises' and 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' as one of the best films I've seen this year.
So far.
