  • 50 Years of Carrying On

This year sees the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the film Carry On Sergeant - a film that would spawn another 30 movies in the series and British cinema institution - the Carry On film.

A series of comedy movies that were only linked by the creative team and a set of regular actors, the Carry On's are best known for their bawdy humour and remain popular today, 30 years after the last one was made (not counting the ill-fated and frankly terrible Carry On Columbus in 1992).

The series hit it's stride in 1964 with Carry On Cleo which re-used the sets from Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra and had a straight run of classics until 1969 with Carry On Again Doctor(1967's Carry On Follow That Camel featured Phil 'Bilko' Silvers). Several subsequant entries were passable (Carry On Henry in 1971 and Carry On Dick in 1974) but by 1978's Carry On Emmanuelle it was clearly time to give up.

Gerald Thomas directed all 31 films and Talbot Rothwell was responsible for the majority of the scripts. The main cast of regulars included Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Charles Hawtry, Joan Simms, Hattie Jaques, Bernard Bresslaw and Barbara Windsor. Also featuring in 11 of the films was Jim Dale - later famous for originating the title role in the musical Barnum.

To celebrate this anniversary, this Saturday the BBC will have a 'Carry On Night' featuring programs about the series and several of this films.
