  • Disney owns land on LV strip?

A friend of mine just returned from Las Vegas and the casino host at his hotel told him that Disney has purchased a large parcel of land on the strip near Circus Circus. Not sure if this has been posted before but does anyone know if this is true and if so what the plans are?

I have not heard this, but we were on the strip last week and there is indeed a massive lot with NOTHING on it right infront of the Trump hotel and south of Circus-Circus. There was some staging material in the part of the lot facing the Strip for the construction just north of the Riviera.

I don't know if this lot is owned by Disney or not, but just for the fact check, there is a large unused lot at this location. Is there a way to check corporate purchases on the strip? Through public records in Vegas? Anyone in Vegas who can make a trip to City Hall?

If you know what the company name is, you can do a property tax search on the Clark County Treasurer's website.

Ok, so now we have the really great task of trying to figure out all the companies that recently bought property on Las Vegas Blvd. Those poor saps who were trying to figure out who was buying up all that Orange Cnty FL swamp land. I feel their pain now.

I agree! What on earth would they do with it. Apparently the casino host was adament they owned it. I think it may be a little far fetched but figured I would throw it out there to see if anyone else has heard of this.

Wasn't there just a recent thread about DL operating a resort in Vegas?

I believe it was a hypothetical thread though and not based on facts...

As far as finding out who the owner is, that is easy. Just find out the address or the parcel number and call the Planning dept and ask them who owns it. It's public record info, so no big deal.

I would imagine that it wouldn't be under the Disney name though, for obvious reasons...

Remember: If it was Disney, they have a Corporate Memory - They've been burned at least twice before (Anaheim and Florida) when word gets out they are buying and the land prices spike 1,000% or more in response - the first acre in Florida was $80, the last was $80,000. So they would use many carefully concealed straw buyers to buy up the land they want. For Florida, they had many different fake entities under personal and corporate names, like the "Reedy Creek Ranch"...

Once they have the land locked down and their plans underway, THEN they tell the truth about who really bought it.

In other words, you can go search the property tax rolls and get a bunch of names that don't mean anything. But unless you want to spend a lot of time checking out each of those names to find out if they are who they portray themselves, you might not find out the truth.

Or it might lead you to another person or corporation with designs on getting into the Casino Resort business, or an existing player looking for expansion room to put up a new resort.

Or maybe even someone started the rumor with the soul purpose to try to spike the prices of the land... umm....

Definitely true Bruce... though they were buying 47 square miles in Florida and the strip has only several acres free.

Yeah, that other thread was a hypothetical what if which had some pretty interesting debate in it and a lot of really good posts. I recommend reading it to anyone.

Disney definitely does a great job of distancing themselves from land purchases. Will be interesting to see if there is anything to this, or just a rumor. I'm going to assume just a rumor with nothing behind it.

If anything, the most Disney would do in Vegas would be a vacation club site. There are a number of major hotels that have been building vacation club facilities around the Strip in recent years. As they are non gambling resorts, that's probably the best Disney could do there.

Re: Disney owns land on LV strip?

I'm going to have to chalk this up as an almost impossible rumor.
That land that I think you are describing was once the location of the Stardust, Westward Ho, and Budget Suites. The property (which is not vacant at the moment but stalled in the middle of construction) is the site of the Echelon project which you can check out at this link:
                        Echelon Las Vegas
This map shows the lot of the Echelon, just south of Circus Circus and across the street from the Encore - (in the map north is to the right).

So unless Disney is going under various company names as stated above, I don't think this is a Disney resort.
This project is under Boyd Gaming Corporation, which is not a new name in the gaming business just created by Disney, i believe.
And thru some wikipedia help, Morgans Hotel Group, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, and General Growth Properties are also companies in the project ... no Disney.

Here's a pic of the stalled state of construction, meaning work has already started on this resort:
                        http://www.vegastodayandtomorrow.com...on_122608a.jpg

but I guess there could always be the slim, very slim possibility that Disney bought out the stalled project from the previous owners to use their money and run the hotels ... but I don't really see that happening.

You can check out the Echelon website for more details on that project:

Lucky bugger, staying in Encore to take that pic!

Hm... I'm wondering if I'm thinking of a different lot then. The one I was thinking of had no construction in it, but maybe I'm thinking that the south end of the lot was a separate site since it took a full 20 minutes to drive the length of the Riviera in that crazy traffic.

If anything I would think that they would have bought land south of Tropicana...aren't they going to move McCarran down south into the sticks to try to get more air traffic into LAS? Last things I heard the big properties were buying up land near the proposed airport to extend the Strip farther south.

This certainly is fascinating. If Disney did buy land in LV, that could mean something huge is coming.
