  • Iger NEEDS to resign!

Okay, just saw this: Disney Prepares To Replace Johnny Depp In ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Franchise MTV Movies Blog. I find that this is just the icing on the cake. Bob Iger needs to resign. I actually think he's crossed the threshold and is now WORSE than Eisner. Hopefully Steve Jobs and the rest of the stockholder start a revolt against him.

I'm not sure about the corporate politics at Disney, but that article sounds like it could be really bad.

My feeling is no Johnny Depp, no Jack Sparrow. And without Jack Sparrow a POTC film just won't sail.

If/when Johnny decides to leave....not a decision made by Iger.

But the reason why he might (probably) drop out is because Iger fired Dick Cook, who had been Depp's most trusted ally on both the Pirates trilogy and the new Alice in Wonderland.

Johnny Depp is Captain Jack. Captain Jack can't be portrayed by anyone else but Johnny. So no Johnny, no Jack.

Check the wording of the article. Unfortunately, not the smoking gun needed for imminent Igerlessness:
According to a tip received by Cinema Blend, the studio is preparing to replace Depp if/when he decides to abandon ship. This may not happen with "On Stranger Tides," as Disney is likely prepared to offer him as much money as it takes to keep him aboard. The actor, who is said to be aware the last two movies "sucked," will definitely not be sticking around for the fifth and sixth installments if the tipster is to be believed.
The "tip from Cinema Blend" referred to says:
Adding to the comments Depp made to the L.A. Times, our regular tipster is saying that even if he makes the fourth film, he definitely won't be back for a fifth or sixth. Given that the Pirates franchise was the only live-action property making any money for the studio, they could reach deep in their pockets and keep Depp on for #4, but they're also preparing to replace Captain Jack with a entirely new character if he refuses a fifth and sixth film.
Tips, ifs, coulds and maybes about 5th/6th sequels somewhere in the future do not a mutiny make.

                  Re: Iger NEEDS to resign!

Its my understanding that Dick Cook had already agreed to step down as Chairman of the Studios before him and Depp had annouced the fourth instalment of the franchise at the D23 Expo. People who spoke to him that Weekend were told the news by Cook himself. So I struggle to believe Depp a Friend of Cook's did not have knowledge before hand that he would be stepping down. And the comments made in the LA Times was probarely a political move by Johnny Depp to score a better deal out of Disney. Its also been reported by Depp in the past that he's more than happy to continue these movies as he enjoys making them.

I take the comments written in the blog as complete nonsense and see absolutely no reason why Bob Iger would need to resign over this. I think Bob Iger is doing a good job and its a rather exciting time to be following Disney at the moment under his leadership.

I think they should call it quits after IV any way. So why not let this be the reason to close the chapter on Sparrow?

I would love to see if they can make a character bigger than Jack in popularity. I wonder if Orlando Bloom and Kiera will be in the fouth one since Their story is pretty much done. Unfortunatly so is Davy Jones' story. I loved Davy!

Actually, they should have called it quits after #1. It's been downhill ever since. If it weren't for Depp, the films certainly wouldn't have done well.

I can't believe they would even CONSIDER making P4 if Johnny wasn't there. Sparrow cannot exist without Johnny and Orlando and Keira already aren't returning so who is left? I don't think Barbossa can hold his own film. If they replace Johnny and choose someone else to be Jack I honestly would just see it as a parody.

Johnny Depp will be in the forth installment. This thread is a bit misleading in to having some believe he may bow out of this upcoming film. As far as I am aware of the contracts have already been signed and filed. They wouldn't announce a return of Depp if it was still a maybe.

And it takes more than just "Depp leaving" to call upon Iger's resignation.
