  • Disney teams up with Apple

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051012/...NlYwN5bmNhdA--

With the new video iPod Apple will now feature the ability to download ABC shows like Lost or Desperate Housewives on to your iPod. This is a clear sign that now with Eisner out of the picture Jobs is willing to work with Disney. Iger shows great determination to bring back positive relations with Jobs, especially in the hopes that it will bring around a new deal with Pixar.

I expect a deal with Pixar to be announced before the year ends, or as late as the shareholders meeting early in the new year.

They have already been offering Disney content through podcasts. But I agree that this is a good sign that he is ready to talk turkey with Disney.

podcast are not Apple specific - just a downloadable file.

Today's announcement by Apple at the unveiling of the video ipod that they have struck a content deal with Disney is huge.

Jobs and Iger sharing the stage today. With this news I am sure that it will happen again in Emeryville at Pixar.

Re: Disney teams up with Apple

thanks for the definition of podcasts.

I was just pointing out that this is not the first thing Apple and Disney have done together since the rift.

        http://www.micechat.com/forums/showt...highlight=ipod

As this story reports, they have been working together to provide content that is exclusive to iTunes. I agree that this is a good sign, but it is not the first, there have been many and primarily among those is the fact thar Jobs has not signed a contract with anyone else.

I predict that they will renew their partnership.

Re: Disney teams up with Apple

Well, I don't know if the partnership will continue... Pixar shareholders will not alow the same deal to be made or renewed... But I believe a distribution deal is workable...

agreed, but on some level, I think they will be able to reach a compromise.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but this is not really exciting news to me. The Disney company has been striving towards integrating new technology for a while now. Look at VMK, interactive attractions, etc. Iger is on the forefront of a campaign to offer movies as legally downloadable content for a price. I would have been much more surprised to learn that Iger was not partnering with Apple to offer content- its a no brainer and perfectly in keeping with the current strategy of the company.

The Apple/Disney partnership is obviously beneficial for both companies as they have been working together for some time now.

Re: Disney teams up with Apple

I guess it's exciting not only for the Disney aspect of it... but also because I'm a fan of Apple as well, and this was also the announcement of the new iPod so not only is it a video playing iPod but it is also a deal with Disney, so, for me its pretty cool.

Disney and Apple have a lot in common as far as company objectives go especially with trying to stay on the forefront of technology and this of course is great in the long process of Iger getting iMovies (just an idea for what the program would be called) for Disney content purchased online. It's a little bit away but this a great step in the right direction for both companies.

Re: Disney teams up with Apple

I totally agree with that sentiment- I am a huge apple fan and am sorely tempted to upgrade my photo ipod to this new technology. It is a great advance in the technology.

Like I said, I am glad Disney is on board at the ground floor because I am sure other networks will want to jump on.

I wonder if they will be offering content from their other networks? Everyone knows they own ESPN and the Disney Channel, but they also own Lifetime, E! and A&E, along with other cable networks.

downloading Sportscenter everynight to watch on the iPod later.... that has a nice ring to it.

Disney and Apple together...sounds like they may be ready to take on Vivendi and Microsoft. Anything to bring back Mr.Jobs and Pixar back to the Disney bargaining table is a good thing. Disney/Pixar = Lots of money and who doesnt like Lots of Money?

As long as they continue to use Windows based computers I'm happy.

You just had to take it there....::shakes fist::

As far as Apple/Disney taking on Vivendi... it is such a different company than it used to be. Not being the owner of Universal/NBC anymore is a big change, GE is a way more appropriate owner than Vivendi ever was. As far as Microsoft goes, I doubt a Disney/Apple connection will interfer with software development, there is only so far Disney can/will stretch away from its core business right now with Iger in charge. He seems much more intent on strengthing the current depts. without going out into new territory.

Question: why does one need an iPod of any sort for this? Couldn't a PC connected to a hard drive do the same thing, then send the show to a TV set somehow?
And then DIS could collect the revenues itself from the downloader?
Is this going to be a free download? If not, how much would someone pay for content that can be TiVo'd?

the iPod makes it portable- its not the content that matters- its the fact that it can be carried and watched in such a small and portable device. I don't have a laptop and don't want to carry one around to watch TV or movies when I am traveling, or just bored. Its not meant for people who will watch it at home, or on your tv.
