  • Separate Category for Digital Animation?

What with all the films vying for nominations for best animated feature, Do you think the Oscars should have a separate category for Digital Animation?

On another tangential thought, should there be a separate category for Live action films that are heavily animated (like Chipmunks or Transformers)

Re: Separate Category for Digital Animation?

Are there even enough non-digital animated movies to justify their own category?

Aren't movies like The Princess and the Frog coloured via a digital process anyway? Which category would that movie qualify for?

Transformers 2 deserves something, but an Oscar is not it.

I'd prefer they do separate categories for comedy/drama like the Golden Globes do, rather than expand the animated nominees.

The best animated movie should be the one that tells the best story, or packs the biggest emotional punch, etc. The means by which it is animated shouldn't matter a lot, in theory...

Not for the Academy Awards, it is an award for Best animated feature film of the year. If the Annie Awards don't make the technical distinction from an animation industry standpoint why should the overal AMPAS membership?
        The Annie Awards

With regards to the latter, the category for Achievement in visual effects typically covers ILM-ed films such as 'Transformers' or 'POTC 3', both of which lost by the way to 'The Golden Compass' in 2008.

If the technology used for Avatar catches on, then the lines between Live action and animation will be blurred even further.

Avatar... exactly, or like say Gollum in LOTR, or Yoda, yes even Optimus. There are now animated characters in Live action films... Are they simply an effect? or is there some recognition of the Animated performance that should/could be recognized....

And in terms of separating Digital vs Classic (Hand Drawn, Stop Motion etc..) coming from a non animation back ground, a part of me feels like it is such a very different craft... I dunno more thoughts?
