  • Princess and the Frog, will it be good?

With a little under a month 'til Disney's long awaited 2D animated adventure leaps on to the big screen, will the film fare good at the box office? Well, I sit at crossroads thinking the very same thing. The merchandise has already flown off the shelves along with advanced tickets. So you think there's lots of support building up to its release.

But remember, "Frog" is taking the stage a mere week before James Cameron's "Dances with Wolves in the future", Avatar. Will the merry musical stay afloat with the competition, or will it simply sink down the box office list and "croak"! >:3

    Any thoughts, Forum!

Re: Princess and the Frog, will it be good?

well according to my friend, mr. imdb (internet movie database)

princess and the frog and avatar come out on the same day (dec 11th)

and i have noticed that most of the time a good children's film can beat out any pg 13 comedy action scifi or any other film targetting an audience between the ages of 13 and 49

and since this is a 2d animation princess movie from Disney, there are high expectations and not only will loyal Disney people go see the movie, but so will the average family with a kid 12 years or younger will also go and see the movie on the first weekend

so in conclusion, the avatar movie doesn't exactly IMO, have as loyal fans as Disney does, so i'm guessing PatF will take the top spot on its first weekend, but the second weekend is clueless to me

EDIT: ok nevermind avatar does come out a week after PatF, that totally ruins my argument above, but i still think princess and the frog will beat out avatar

Frog has the benefit of being a family movie. This means that not only will it get the ticket sales for the kids going to see it, but the parents taking their kids. Avatar doesn't have this benefit. Avatar is also a rather stylized movie from what I can tell and those don't always appeal to everyone. I think Frog will do just fine up against Avatar. They are totally different audiences they are going for.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

I hope it'll be good! Without too much knowledge about the film, I have no real reason to think it won't be...but then again, I'm not the HUGEST fan of Disney's animated films.

I'm really disappointed in the lack of creative stories being pushed out these days. Disney, if you really want to make money, people are still waiting for the next Lion King/Beauty and the Beast to come out. I'm super happy they are bringing back traditional animation but how can they possibly hope to make big bucks again without a story every age and background can enjoy? This was their chance to make a huge impact with the return of hand drawn animation and they blew it.

Re: Princess and the Frog, will it be good?

Oh I hope it does well!! I'm getting so sick of seeing computer animation I could scream. :bang:

I'm a little bit worried about it though. It may sound funny, but the thing that concerns me most are the ads for it that I have seen. Remember back in the 90s when an add for the newest Disney movie pretty much consisted only of the films' songs? I haven't really seen any of that for Princess and the Frog. Snippets, sure, but you could practically already sing Circle of Life before Lion King came out in theaters. So I'm sitting here thinking, "What, aren't the songs good enough to attract people? Curse you Lasseter, you just should've kept Menken instead of falling on Randy Newman again!!!" I'm probably worrying about nothing though.....

well i don't think we should totally criticize the movie until we actually see it
remember how everyone was bashing on tiana's showboat jubilee in WDW before they actually saw it?

              now everybody loves it.
so let's not be quick to judge until the movie actually comes out

(unless somebody here was at the premiere this past weekend)

The Princess and the Frog is a pretty well known story and has been around in American Society long enough for any generation to recognize the premise, however it has not been played out so much that any incarnation of it will make it a boring or worthless movie. The unknown factor here is the amount of 'spin' that Disney has chosen to put into this tale. Almost every Disney story told that was based on classic tales have had their share of Disney spin to it to make it essentially its own original version of the tale. Recently I would say that they had gone overboard with movies like Emporer's New Groove and Hercules. Let's hope that this trend doesn't present itself as being alive in The Princess and the Frog.

My wife and I are very excited to see this and we actually may go to the DTD AMC to watch it on opening day for the sake of being able to take our daughter to the meet & greet and watch the river show after.

I'm excited to see it and I have fairly high hopes for it as well. Only time will tell how successful it will be, but I have a feeling that it's going to be a big hit among kids and families.

According to iMDB, AVATAR is released on December 18th, while THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG is on December 11th. No hate! Entirely different demographics! (Except for nerds like me, haha.)

Anyways, I really wouldn't worry -- at all -- about THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG's potential to tank. There is none. Have you seen the merchandise flying off the shelves already? Little girls, of all colours, shapes, and sizes, LOVE HER. Princess Tiana is going to EXPLODE. Trust me.

I don't doubt any financial success for this movie, at least in the first week of opening, but just critic/viewer response.

We've seen a bunch of scenes now and heard a good deal of the music, but for me it all depends on how well all those things are tied together. My hopes for it are good though.

Edit: also on avatar, I really can't get myself to like the style of the graphics all that much. something about it just rubs me the wrong way. And it all seems a bit overblown.

I saw two preview screenings, one in May and one in September. I posted a review on an earlier thread (here) and I think that's all still valid. I would say for me, animation was A+, music was B- (better than Dreamworks could do still), story B+, romance B, villain A, humor B. Reading about it online and seeing the crowd at the mall last weekend to meet Tiana I would guess this will do very very well in cities, but on its merits it should fare at least as well as Mulan. I hope even better. I'm interested to see for sure, and I want to see how those last few unfinished scenes turned out.

I am so anxious for this movie. I think the music is going to be splendid with a mix of Jazz and Bayou Blues which will be great. I love the voice cast behind the characters and the return of Disney hand drawn animation is such a delight. Of all the movies I see in the theater "just to check out" there is no way I am missing this one!

It's a little old, but still enjoy!
