Re: Disney/Marvel Merger 2B Finalized Dec 31st... What Of IOA's Marvel Super Hero Isl
Now that it appears inevidable that Marvel shareholders will move to approve the Disney aquisition the last day of 2009, does this mean that Disney will ring in the new year with plans to force Universal to drop it's Marvel character based IOA attractions and retheme all of Marvel Super Hero Island? Seems to me this could be a very reall possibility once the Universal's contracts with Marvel run out.Last edited by JtnOrl; 12-08-2009, 06:30 PM.

As for movies, Disney can make movies based on Marvel characters, but not ones based on characters that already spoken for by other studios. For example, Spider-Man's movie rights are owned by Sony and X-Men's are owned by Fox. Unfortunately for Disney, practically all of Marvel's popular characters are spoken for.To Boldly Go Where No MiceChatter Has Gone Before!

According to commicbookmovie.com, "Marvel’s characters are also currently tied to Universal Studios’ theme parks, which means it would probably be a long time before we see Spider-Man at Disneyland — or anything as cool as the recently released concept art for a Marvel theme park in Dubai." Still, I doubt that Disney is blindly purchasing Marvel if movie and theme park ties with other companies would inhibit/prohibit it from making movies and rides based on major charaters for many years to come.
If remember correctly the contract that universal has with Marvel only allows them to use certain characters for theme park use and only in the state of Florida and other international parks. the contract in California is no longer valid so Disney could very well use the characters in Anaheim. So if they wanted to they could use it in DCA maybe hollywood backlot or the possibility of a new land in a possible third gate.

I believe their current contract expires in 2012 which by then they would have to renegotiate a new contract with Disney. At that point Disney could play hardball and charge prime rates forcing universal to abondoned some concepts if they feel that the price is too high. This already happened at universal hollywood where contracts for walk around characters were not renewedLast edited by Baloo; 12-12-2009, 08:35 PM.

MArvel has contracts with certain movie studios that can not be stopped. So Disney can not use characters like Spiderman for their own versions of movies until the contracts between Marvel and other studios are done.
I believe those studios cantracts allows them to do only a certain amount of movies based on certain characters because of this they need to pick the correct frnachise to exploit for the rest of their contracts.
As for the Marvel park, i am not sure what kind of contract Marvel has but this could very well be the way Disney enters the market in that part of the world. Someone else builds the park and Disney will cash in on revenue from royalties and at the smae time have control of what gets put in a park with a name they own.
SInce the park is not built yet we might even see some changes and the nick part of the park might dissapear and instead Disney could push for something else that is not owned by a rival media companyLast edited by Baloo; 12-12-2009, 08:56 PM.

WDW will likely have Marvel characters eventually. In the meantime, hope you will be able to come to DL... should they appear there in the near future. To Boldly Go Where No MiceChatter Has Gone Before!

Disney can not force or cancell the contract unless they find a loophole but they could buy off the contract and pay universal. This would only happen if they think that they could generate more money off the characters over the cost of the contract. Now if i remember correctly the contract that universal has with Marvel only allows them to use the characters already represented withint he park. If and when they consider doing major alterations with the attractions they will have to renegotaite with Marvel/Disney. the only way they could add any new attraction is if they a;ready had predetermined ideas in the design phase. This goes for attractions, retail and eateieres with Marvel themes of the characters they do use.
