'Avatar' heads Golden Globes contenders - Yahoo! News

BEVERLY HILLS (AFP) – Futuristic epic "Avatar" and downsizing drama "Up In the Air" led the field as nominees for the 67th Golden Globes were unveiled on Tuesday, signaling the start of Hollywood's awards season.
Despite the fact that it has yet to be released in North America, Oscar-winner James Cameron's ground-breaking "Avatar" scored nominations in the best drama and best director categories for the January 17 awards show.
The nominations will fuel hype about the film, which has garnered stellar reviews following its world premiere in London last week.
However "Titanic" director Cameron's big budget labor of love faces stiff competition from "Up In the Air," the acclaimed story about a corporate downsizer played by George Clooney who starts to question his life.
    <A rel=nofollow><A rel=nofollow><A title=quickTime-high rel=nofollow><A title=windowsMedia-high rel=nofollow><A title=flash rel=nofollow><A title=jpeg rel=nofollow><A title=mpeg2 rel=nofollow>The film picked up several nominations including best drama, a best actor nod for Clooney, and best director for Jason Reitman.
Other contenders for best drama include gripping Iraq war drama "The Hurt Locker," Quentin Tarantino's blood-soaked World War Two revenge fantasy "Inglourious Basterds" and gritty drama "Precious," about the struggles of an obese, illiterate and abused African-American teenager.

"Up in the Air' is an extraordinary film, Clooney has managed to top even the outstanding performance in gave in 'Michael Clayton'. I believe he'll be adding a Best Actor Oscar to the mantle to keep his Best Supporting one company. This could happen as long as that wily Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't snatch it away again.

And I bet never in a trillion years did Cameron ever expect to be in the same Best Director category with one of his many ex-wives?! Great to see the multi-talented Kathryn Bigelow receive so much acclaim this year for her amazing film.

My question is ... is "Sherlock Holmes" a Comedy? Why is Robert Downey Jr. nominated for that movie in the comedy category?

Based on the trailer I saw, it looks like a comedy.

For the same reason Julia Roberts received a Best Actress nomination for 'Duplicity' Not that she wasn't good in the film, so was Clive Owen, but the real reasons the HFPA does this event every year.

You'll notice there is always an extremely wide net cast of A-List names, all the better to have the awards dinner & ceremony with and mingle with at the after-parties. Not to mention all the pre-awards private screenings & studio events. And those major and currently hot names not nominated? Get 'em there as presenters! The HFPA is the most hilariously fun group around the industry.

My guess is that Up in the Air will win strictly based on the fact that I haven't heard of it.

Glee is nominated for a bunch of stuff... Best Actress in a comedy (Lea Michelle), Best Supporting Actress (Jane Lynch), Best Supporting Actor (Matt Morrison), and Best Comedy/Musical series. I wonder if they'll perform...

It's the one with the widespread outdoor and television campaign.

I was disappointed not the see Katey Sagal nominated for her role on Sons of Anarchy. She's been freaking amazing.

                            A few reasons:

beacuse they've all already been screened for the HFPA

some of the films have already or will open soon in foreign markets, plus they'll be out by the time the televised ceremony takes place.

and the timing allows the HFPA the appearance as tastemakers ahead of
the Academy Award nominations to come.

I don't understand why no movies that came out before September are nominated. There were good movies release during the first months of this year. And how come movies like Avatar and others that are not even released to theaters yet (when these announcements were made) can even be considered. Maybe the FPA sees them but then that means the movie going public (and the people who can make or break a films by either going to see it or not seeing it - and by that I mean the amount of $$$ a movie makes) have not had a chance to see them. Makes no sense to me at all.

I can see Cameron being nominated for a director award, he pulled together a technical extravaganza... but Best Drama? Doesn't make any sense. The film was really enjoyable, but the story itself was barely par and the character development was minimal. The experience was enjoyable, but so many other films should come ahead of it.

I've actually seen very little advertising for the film. If it wasn't for me actually putting in an effort to keep up with movie releases, I doubt I would have heard of it either. Now that I think about it, i don't think I've even seen a trailer for it.

You must not read many newspapers or magazines then cause advertising for Avatar has been very heavy for the last month or so. Same with TV. Many, Many ads for sponsers that are tied into Avatar showing scenes, whole 1/2 hour infomercials showing a lot of stuff and scenes from the movie. I actually have seen more on Avatar on TV than I have of Princess and Frog, and there is tons of that one as well that no one seems to be paying any attention too. Sad.

Not sure who this was directed to, but if me, I was referring to Up in the Air. Not Avatar.
