Sam Mendes to direct next James Bond movie

By Matthew Belloni and Borys Kit
    The Hollywood Reporter
    January 5, 2010

It's Mendes. Sam Mendes. The British helmer is in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the venerable James Bond franchise.

Production is being fast-tracked and could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release. Plans for the film are moving forward despite a possible sale of MGM. Sony co-produced and distributed the most recent installment of the 007 series with MGM.

Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing, along with "Frost/Nixon" scribe Peter Morgan. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producing. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007.

The film will be Mendes' first action-heavy project, although his 2005 effort "Jarhead" was set amid U.S. war in Kuwait. Mendes' last directorial effort, the road-trip dramedy "Away We Go," grossed $10 million domestically last summer.

Marc Forster directed the previous Bond film, 2008's "Quantum of Solace," which grossed $586 million worldwide.

He's married to Kate Winslet, maybe he can get her to play a super-villainess!

Can't wait. The last two movies were really good. I'm looking forward to a new storyline with Daniel Craig though.

Hmmm...I am interested to see how this will go. I loved Casino Royale, it's one of the most rewatched movies I own. But, I didn't care for Quantum of Solace. It was very hard to follow, and I had to watch it twice just to somewhat understand what was going on.

I'm more anxious to see who will be in the movie with Craig. I wasn't impressed with the femmes in the last movie.

I've known about Bond 23 since the last movie. They're not yet sure what they're going to call it but by judging by the last 2 Bond films, it's going to be good

The Los Angeles Times is already on the Mendes' case:
007 bondage would be a bad move for Sam Mendes - latimes.com

My guess is that the media will be calling for Kathryn Bigelow to direct the film instead, she's got more of an action director background & huge momentum with all the much-deserved recognition for 'The Hurt Locker'.

If I'm not mistaken....Quantum of Solace was the only remaining Bond book title that had not been used for a movie. So, unless they reuse a title from a previously made movie, this will be the first Bond movie with a totally original title.

It just might be.... guess we'll have to watch and wait. But if they do redo movies from the past, which one would you all like to see?

I think the Roger Moore era movies had some GREAT plots and would have been better if there was a better Bond.

hmmm...Diamonds are Forever is on the top of my list. That movie was torture to sit through. I think banging my head against the wall would have provided more enjoyment.

I agree. What were they thinking? Sure, it was the 70's....and people thought odd things were attractive...but, Roger Moore? What beer goggles were those casting agents looking through?

They might as well start re-using the titles, the new films have hardly any resemblance to the old ones.

May I recommend "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (name) for Bond 23?
