  • Princess and the Frog Pendants being recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today the recall of "The Princess and The Frog" pendants due to high levels of a toxic metal. The pendants, found at Walmart, were found to contain cadmium, a metal that is found to cause harm to the kidneys, bones and can disrupt brain development in children.

Other tests are currently being done by the CPSC on other Disney pendants and other childrens metal jewelry imported from China, where "The Princess and The Frog" pendants were made.

In response to the findings and the recall, Manuel G. Grace, Disney Co.'s senior vice president for product integrity, has advised its vendors and licensees that it is setting a zero-tolerance policy for cadmium in any children's jewelry bearing the Disney name. The company is now requiring that all jewelry products be tested for the toxic metal and if cadmium is found, the production of that product will be halted and destroyed.

Walmart has been selling the pendants since November, in conjunction with the release of the movie. Anyone who has purchased the pendant can return it to Walmart for a refund.

This is the first time in the U.S. that a consumer product has been recalled because of cadmium.
