News: Pixar's Newt Stepped On, Left To Die | Latino Review

Earlier this evening I received an email response from Walt Disney Company archivist Dave Smith (or a representative) informing me that Pixar's Newt "has been cancelled". This confirms the rumors that have been swirling around the film in the past few months.

When news broke a few hours ago that the film had been deleted from the latest supplement to Smith's Disney encyclopedia Disney A to Z, I emailed Smith at his public address dave.smith@disney.com:
    Hi Dave,
I was just wondering why there's no information on Pixar's Newt in the latest supplement to Disney A to Z? The entry seems to have been deleted.

    Best,
    Mike Bastoli

Somewhat sneakily, I sent the question from my personal email address with no mention of this blog.

Shortly after 6:00 PM I received the short reply, which I really wasn't expecting. It was unsigned but came from Smith's address:
    The film has been cancelled.

    This makes me sad....

This is the first time I've heard it! All the news articles that came up were from this past week too, with older articles being "rumors".

I posted it in my animation presence in theme park tracker (in my sig) and it was also mentioned in several threads when Pixar announced Monsters Inc 2.

So it was a footnote and not its own headline?

Geez, no wonder I didn't hear anything about it until now...

Yah. Kingdom of the Elves was cancelled too. Generally it was so far in advance and nobody really knew what it was about so there wasn't much to talk about. Just that it's cancelled. If it was something like a Toy Story or Monsters Inc sequel getting cancelled, that would be a bigger conversation.

Re: Pixar's newt is OFFICIALLY CANCELLED

Well, right now, most of the movie critics are starting to believe that Pixar is going through sequelitist.

And with the character models already built and rigged in their servers, from what I've been able to find, it just seems strange that they would cancel it when they have the cast ready to go (sort of).

When you combine those two elements together, yes, I'm still surprised that newt's cancellation is a footnote. Kingdom of Elves, I can understand, because like you point out, it was extremely early in the project and so far down the line that nobody knew what that was about. That really isn't the case with newt.

And this is a very scary thought considering I have a very high regard for Pixar and its team. But you can get just so far with sequels. Sooner or later that well will run dry and you are going to need the fresh ideas and stories to keep the company in the top spot where it is. There are already way to many sequels and remakes in the pipeline now.

If you look at the bottom of this page under "Similar Threads", there was at least one thread started on the cancellation back on February 23, 2010.

Re: Pixar's newt is OFFICIALLY CANCELLED

Well after looking around at various trailers, I think I found a factor on Newt getting cancelled.

Next year there's going to be a couple animated films that'll be using the same kind of romantic comedy formula Newt would be using.

Rio, which is being done by Blue Sky, is about a rare macaw who thinks he's the last of his kind and finds a female in Rio.

                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_(film)

Then there's Alpha and Omega, which is about two wolves who are forced to be mates...girl doesn't like guy, but they end up loving each other yadda-yadda and so forth.

                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_and_Omega_(film)

Even though Newt wasn't supposed to come out till 2012, it would just be overkill with the formula we've all seen before. While this may not be a factor in it's cancellation, I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
Disney and Universal fan for life!...Shocking ain't it?

I asked Pete Docter about Newt and he says it's "shelved" for the time being. Maybe it'll come back, who knows.

There was also "Ice Age 2" a few years ago, with Manny and Ellie thinking they were the last two mammoths (also done by Blue Sky).

The idea of Newt getting shelved and another sequel added to the roster concerns me. I think Monsters Inc. 2 could be a good movie (there's a lot more that could be explored about that universe), I just hope this isn't an early sign of Disney corporate paranoia about "risky" original films taking hold. Sometimes, the annual Pixar release seems like the only original Summer blockbuster of the year, with everything else being sequels and/or adaptations of pre-existing comics and TV shows.

I'm really not concerned. Pixar is working with a lot of new directors while Bird and Stanton are off directing features. It's easier for them to gain experience with established characters and worlds because it allows them to focus on the story first and foremost without the overwhelming task of creating everything from the ground up. They are good training grounds. Pixar is smart enough to not put a project out unless it is Pixar quality. I for one, will patiently wait for whatever comes out of their hat next because when it does - you know it'll be thought out and ready.

i just saw the trailer to alpha and omega, that looks soooo awful. the animation looks so poor, the gags look mediocre, and it looks really cheap. yeah, i doubt it'll be animated film of the year.
