  • Disney flexes 'Million Dollar Arm'

Under the new leadership of Rich Ross and Sean Bailey, Disney has been largely getting attention for focusing on big-name four-quadrant-style tentpoles as part of their film strategy. One staple that had become inactive was the inspirational sports drama, an arena in which Ciardi and Gray made their names. With dealmaking happening a month and a half after the studio picked up an untitled baseball pitch with Bradley Cooper attached, it appears that a rethink of the Disney sports drama is underway.

"Arm" tells the story of two young men from India, one a cricket player, the other a javelin thrower, who are plucked from their rural Hindi villages by a sports agent and join the minor leagues of American baseball. Culture clashes, and learning English through action movies and rap songs, ensue.

The feature project is based on an Indian reality TV series.

After being set up for several months at Columbia, the studio decided to take it to Disney, with whom they have strong relationships.

Roth produced the billion-dollar grossing "Alice in Wonderland" and is developing the high-profile "Wizard of Oz" prequel "Oz: The Great and Powerful" with Sam Raimi and Robert Downey Jr.

Wow this is the first I'm hearing of a Wizard of Oz prequel: I hope they do it right, cause with today's technology it has the potential to be mind-blowing (and Robert Downey Jr. is an awesome actor).
