  • Green Lantern

Warner Bros has released the full movie trailer for Martin Campbell‘s big screen adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, and Tim Robbins.

I like how they save the sci-f/DC Comics logo reveal to half way through the trailer, trying to sell audiences on the story of a test pilot. I’m not sure how effective that is however since the second half of the trailer bombards viewers with aliens planets, alien creatures, superhero powers, and a lot of questionable computer generated imagery.

Let’s hope they didn’t skimp on the budget when it comes to the effects. Shooting in New Orleans was definitely a cost cutting measure and it seems like they are very ambitious in what they want to achieve in visual scope. The effects shots look far from finished, which is more than likely since the film isn’t due in theaters until next Summer. I’m definitely not sold on the all-CG suit and the tone seems a bit more comic-laced and geared towards children than I was expecting. The dialogue and deliver seems both cheesy and stilted. That said, having seen how this all fits in the big picture (having visited the set and viewed much of the concept art) I’m still excited to see more. There is a lot we aren’t being shown here.
Just another pretty face in a lame film...

Ya, looks like it may be a stinker, like Fantastic Four. I find it ironic that two movies coming out next year that have the word "green" in their titles, both have guys from Vancouver starring in the lead roles.

I love the Green Lantern comics but this trailer doesn't feel like any of them. I am quite apprehensive about this film.

Sadly, I have to agree with you, brand42. I got on the GL bandwagon just recently reading Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War, and the recent Brightest Night books. Some great work broadening the Green Lantern universe in the comic books, but perhaps that's my problem: too much baggage. The trailer has to appeal to fans and non-fans, but this one is sorta splitting the middle for me. Many hints of cool comic elements but with a very green (no pun intended) -pre-Green Lantern Hal Jordan. I will say that GoldenEye and Casino Royale are among my favorite James Bond films; both were directed by Martin Campbell who's directing Green Lantern. Maybe they included some light (again, no pun intended) material in this trailer to make it appealing to people who know nothing of this superhero and keep some heavier drama out of it. I guess we'll see with the next trailer and finally the movie in seven months!
