  • Best movie soundtrack EVER!!!

So what movie soundtrack do you absolutely love?

I think the Spider Man 2 (Music from the movie and inspired by) has the best songs on it. Dashboard Confessional did agreat job singing "Vindicated".

RENT also looks like it may have a good soundtrack.

So what movie soundtrack do you absolutely love?

      Re: Best movie soundtrack EVER!!!

Ok we gotta back the boat up on this one lets create some guidelines. There is a difference between a soundtrack and music inspired by. For example the original Matrix was an amazing CD all over the board musically and every song was included in the movie but it was not the same CD as the composed music.

Per example if you are discussing soundtracks that were composed, you would toss out names like John William, James Newton Howard, Rice, Alan, Howard Shore, Danny Elfman, Randy Newman, etc. This catagory could also include movies based on musicals like Chicago, Rent, Moulin Rouge, etc

In that regard I still stand by the original Star Wars soundtrack, which was so amazing. After reading the story and seeing bits of the film, Williams was inspired to write the theme which was largely inspired by the music of the old spagetti westerns. If you whistle the theme to Star Wars and slow it down and make it low and mournful it sounds like something you would see the lone cowboy march out to.

In respect to soundtracks with words I still love Moulin Rouge which happens to be largely inspired from real music but simply makes its own impression.

Vanilla Sky is another favorite of mine, Cameron Crowe makes the best film soundtracks and this CD turned me on to a Scottish electronic band named Looper.

Another few non-composed CDs I enjoy: Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels/Snatch.

Favorite musical never turned film would be Spamalot.

Any John Williams soundtrack is wonderful! I think E-ticket has half a dozen star wars sountracks. And I do love Shore's LOTR compositions.
Marge: Barnacle Bill's Home Pregnancy Test? Homer, shouldn't we have gone with a better-known brand?
Homer: But Marge, this one came with a corn-cob pipe!
Marge: [reading from the test box] "Ahoy, Maties! If the water turns blue, a baby for you! If purple ye see, no baby thar be!"
Homer: So, which is it? Blue or purple?
        Marge: Pink.
        Homer: D'oh!
Marge: "If ye test should fail, to a doctor set sail!"

Pirates of the Caribbean had a good soundtrack to. I like every thing done by Danny Elfman too.

I love John Williams!!! I saw him conduct the LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl a couple of years ago and he did some of the best of his works. But the highlight of the show was when James Earl Jones came out and narrated a 45 minute rendion of the score from Star Wars: A New Hope. I cried. It was beautiful. Nothing can compare to hearing it live.

Other sound tracks that I love:

              Pump up the Volume
              The Mask
              Swing Kids
              Pretty Woman
French Kiss (I planned a friends wedding a few years back. I had them walk down the aisle to Louis Armstrong's "La Vie en Rose" from this sound track. It was beautiful!)

I saw this same performance at the HB!

Also a fun soundrack that we have.

Unbreakable, Bowfinger, Rob Roy, Zorro are fun one's, too.

Wasnt' it amazing?!?!?! My daughter is a big Indy fan and was really upset that he didn't include Indy in the main show. But when he did Indy's theme for his 4th or 5th encore, she was ecstatic! I was glad that was her first introduction to live music.

                        For the scores:
Star Wars I-VI (John Williams simply amazing in all of them)
                        Hook (another John Williams classic)
                        A Series of Unfortunate Events
                        Nightmare Before Christmas
                        Jurassic Park
                        Addams Family
                        Addams Family Values
                        Moulin Rouge

                        For best inspired-by soundtracks:
                        Matrix
Queen of the Damned (better music than movie)
                        -Tim

To me, I've always viewed soundtracks and scores differently. For me the best soundtrack ever is Purple Rain. Best original score, is much tougher..I'm partial to William's work in just about everything, but also love Danny Elfman's work, Edward Scissorhands is a very beautiful and haunting piece of work to me.

I'm with you on the difference between a soundtrack (a collection of songs used for a production) and a score (music composed specificially for a production).
