Sony Animation buys 'Enchanted' helmer's pitch

Lima, Sussman sell hybrid live-action, CGI feature

Sony Pictures Animation has enlisted "Enchanted" director Kevin Lima and scribe David Sussman to develop an untitled pitch for the studio.

Described as a hybrid live-action and CGI feature in the vein of "Alice in Wonderland," the project was originated by art director Michael Kurinsky and Chris Chase, who is also producing.
Sussman will script while Lima will helm and produce. Plot details are under wraps, and the greenlight is awaiting Sussman's script.

Since directing Disney's "Enchanted," which grossed more than $300 million worldwide, Lima has been linked to several projects including "The Incredible Mr. Limpet," a remake of a 1964 Don Knotts comedy, and "Candy Land" for Universal.

Sussman has also stayed busy working on the comedy "Marathon" for Sony, produced by Mosaic and George Gatins. Lima and Sussman are also working on a script for an animated 20th Century Fox TV pilot about a New York City family.

SPA's most recent release "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" became a surprise hit for the animation studio in 2009, grossing more than $200 million worldwide. The studios' 2006 "Open Season" earned $164 million in global B.O. receipts, followed a year later by "Surf's Up" with nearly $150 million worldwide.
