  • Live action AKIRA

Well, I know this project has been kicking around for awhile.
But it looks like filming will start sometime after August.
I'm not to thrilled with what they plan on doing with it.

The setting is now New Manhattan instead of Neo-Tokyo.
Also the characters will still be using there original Japanese names but cast with white actors.
I was really hoping they would use Japanese or at least Asian actors.
I'm trying to stay positive about this. Oh well, at least it's not Micheal Bay..right?
Or am I having visions of the recent Speed Racer movie?

Here's a link to the article over at Deadline Hollywood.

Other examples of Japanese titles that Hollywood didn't do well with would be the 1998 Godzilla remake and 2008 Speedracer. Those are two of the top of my head.

          This is bad enough.

This is not only stupid, it's racist. It's basically saying "Asian actors can't believably play Asian characters," which is ludicrous.

They can just forget about getting MY money right now.

            Exactly.

If Asian Americans can't even play Asian characters.... what's left for them to do? This is of course another example of "Racebending" just like it was done with The Last Airbender.... (even though Airbender was created by two white guys, it was heavily influenced by Eastern and Asian culture and mythos).

What Hollywood should do if they're going to insult the fans of Akira is change it entirely. It can be adapted or based off of, but does it have to be "Akira"? Movie remakes change titles all the time to reflect the new space and viewing audience.

What's sad is that WB has a new head of their marketing initiative that is now going to actively pursue advertising specifically to Asians. Well... it might help if you had one in their films once in awhile. Ken Watanabe in Inception isn't enough.

This just has bad news written all over it. Besides blatant racism, Isn't it insulting to the viewing audience, in general, to think that you can't sell a movie unless you put white actors in the lead roles?

I really love the original, too. I really tried to name my first son Kaneda. The wife didn't go for it though...

Ken Watanabe was in Inception? See, I didn't know. Why? Because they don't market that fact. I guess Hollywood must think I'm a white racist in the South who wouldn't see a film if I knew there was a non-white person in it.
