  • 'Reboot Ralph' moves up, 'Monsters University' left back a year

    Disney/Pixar's Sequel
'Monsters University' Release Date Pushed Back

The release calendar for animated films saw several major changes Monday as Disney/Pixar and DreamWorks Animation both rearranged their schedules.

Disney is pushing back the release of Pixar's sequel Monsters University from Nov. 2, 2012 to June 21, 2013.

As a result, Disney toon Reboot Ralph will now open Nov. 2, 2012 -- Monsters' old date -- instead of March 12, 2013.

Within several hours, Paramount and DreamWorks Animation announced they were moving The Croods from March 1, 2013, to March 22, 2013.

In its new home, Monsters University opens two weeks after DreamWorks Animation and Paramount release Turbo.

Monsters Inc. was one of Pixar's earliest hits. The premise for the new movie is under lock and key, although Disney says it will be a prequel.

Makes some sense. I don't believe I have seen two Pixar movies released in the same year.

Reboot Ralph is a rehash of a script they abandoned a few years back. In its previous version, it was called Jumping Jack or Jumping Joe or something close to that. A 1980s video game character (think Mario form Donkey Kong) wants to reinvent himself so that he fits into contemporary video games. The version that I heard about had Joe/Jack/Ralph reinventing himself into a first person shooter type game. Hopefully the rehash is a whole lot more promising than this.

Will this be done with computer animation? With the stunning animation Tangled had, I am excited to see what they do.

Formerly known as 'Joe Jump' the project has been in various stages of development over the years. The film is being directed by Rich Moore of 'The Simpsons' and 'Futurama' fame with many of the 'Princess and the Frog' & 'The Ballad of Nessie' short crew onboard. A few that I've spoken to about the project have said that it's a very different style and look from WDAS and that it's been great & exciting to work with a new director. Looking forward to seeing some art from it soon!

So is this hand-drawn? Also if it's the director of the Simpsons and Futurama I hope that doesn't mean there will be toilet humor.

Primarily CG but who knows, the change of styles within the film might allow for other techniques.

Here is a nice quote from Glen Keane on the film*:

The challenges of Reboot Ralph are entirely different to those of Tangled. There are so many different styles of characters in that movie going from one video game to another to another to another that it’s going to be phenomenal. And I’m telling the team “It’s going to be a whole different challenge for you guys to stretch and expand and become much more versatile than you are right now, so there will be new ways in which we’re going to be growing”.
Also I wouldn't worry too much about the studio turning an important upcoming release into something on par with DWA's 'Flushed Away'. Brad Bird managed to leave 'The Simpsons' with enough commercial & artistic taste/talent intact to deliver 'The Incredibles' and 'Ratatouille' for Pixar.

Is Lassetter TRYING to kill Walt Disney Feature Animation? why doesnt he have Pixar put out this crappy movie? This type of film is not what WDFA should be putting out. Disney Animation is about fairy tales and far off places, leave the "reboot" and computer-y stuff for Pixar. yuck.

If Disney is limited to one genre it will get tired and boring fast. They need to be diverse in order to keep interest.
