  • Walt Disney Studios layoffs expected soon

Walt Disney Studios plans to cut as much as 5% of its worldwide workforce as early as next week, according to people with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity because they had not been authorized to discuss the matter.

The movie studio would eliminate up to 250 jobs from its staff of about 5,000 people globally, the sources said. Several Disney insiders say the bulk of the cuts will be in Burbank.

    I heard about this. I think it's a shame.

The Warners cutbacks are part of a larger industry pattern that has seen a number of studios eliminating jobs, mostly in their home entertainment divisions, because of falling DVD sales, in recent days.

The layoffs affect about 1 percent of the domestic work force in the company.

Earlier this week, Disneyannounced the most sweeping cuts, announcing that 250 jobs will be eliminated, primarily in its distribution operation.

Lionsgate cut 10 jobs in its home entertainment division. And Fox cut 12 positions in home entertainment and 10 in its IT department.

This wouldn't be surprising. I think Disney is still trying shake off last years abysmal performance at the box office. TRON: Legacy and Rapunzel were moderate successes while the Prince of Persia and Sorcerer's Apprentice bombed. Not to mention the complete failure of the Disney contracted efforts from Robert Zmeckis - A Christmas Carol and Mars Needs Moms.

Rapunzel by all means was not a 'moderate' success.
