Well, the other thread got closed for some bizarre reason, so new thread.

Disney has hired a writer for a 3rd TRON film.

Disney Hires Writer for TRON: Legacy Sequel - ComingSoon.net

They are moving forward with it at this point. At least to the script stage.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

I think you're supposed to just say "Tron 3".

) OK, well then why don't they just call it "Tron 3" instead of getting all fancy-pants-cutesie-pie about it, y'know? "Se7en" was maddening enough. That sort of respelling is just so pretentious and annoying.

                I agree. It's silly.

I believe this all started with Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boy"

The idea is to be "hip", "trendy", etc

Goes WAY farther back than that. Started in the 1980s on Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) as a way for members to chat about "forbidden" topics by modifying the alphabet to evade text filters. It was used by hackers, script kiddies, etc... the kind of people who were incredibly good at programming and knew their way around computers. The "elite," if you will, of the internet world. Thus it became known as leet (short for elite), or leetspeak. Sometimes spelled "733t". Old digital calculators offered a chance to have fun with this by typing in numbers, turning it upside down and seeing what words you could spell.

It has only recently caught on in main stream as it has been around for nearly 3 decades.

                          Re: Tr3n

I don't want to be a jerk and I haven't watched any of this guy's stuff yet (I plan to), but my excitement for this movie just dropped a lot. I didn't even think the writing or directing were the best they could be in Tron: Legacy or anything, but I'm nervous that this will turn into straight up bad scifi, like Mansquito or something, as opposed to the fantasy-scifi that the Tron franchise has always been.

If not even the director comes back, I'll be extremely sad. I know there's the possibility that the movie could turn out even better than Tron: Legacy, but I really can't get my hopes up on this one. I'd really be heartbroken if Tron 3 ends up being worse than Legacy.

Don't worry too much just yet... it's way to early to even be thinking about a director yet. This is literally a first writing for any sort of story. It will go through many drafts and get refined, cut to pieces, put back together, completely thrown out and rewritten again, etc. Pixar will probably be involved in this one a bit as well (at least their Brain Trust story guys) once it gets much more fleshed out. For now though, this is more of an interesting tid-bit... it merely means they see enough interest to start moving forward with some of the ideas for sequels and see what kind of a script they can come up with.
