Disney Prepping Adventure Movie Based on Matterhorn Ride

Jason Dean Hall has been hired to write "The Hill," an action-adventure set on the iconic mountain.

Disney is developing an adventure movie project inspired by the Matterhorn ride and has set Jason Dean Hall to pen the script. Justin Springer (Tron Legacy, Prom) is producing the project, which has a working title of The Hill.

Walt Disney's desire for a toboggan-themed roller coaster as well as thoughts he had after an extended trip to Switzerland, the site of the famed mountain. The ride, a centerpiece of the park, was refurbished in 1978, with one of the upgrades being the addition of three automatronic Abominable Snowmen (aka Yetis) who growl at riders.

The idea behind The Hill is to do a thrilling, fast-paced movie centering on five young adventure seekers who, for mysterious reasons, are called to the top of the mountain and encounter a Yetis on the journey down.

Adapting Disney rides into film franchises is a priority for the company. Pirates of the Caribbean is the most successful of the rides-turned-movies, generating $3.7 billion worldwide over four films. A movie was made out of the Haunted Mansion, and another is being developed with Guillermo del Toro producing. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a Disney film, then a theme park ride, and is now being rebooted as a David Fincher directing vehicle. The ultimate theme park movie might be Disney's Magic Kingdom, which is set entirely in the park. That project is being developed by writer Michael Chabon and director Jon Favreau.

Back in 2004 the pilot for HBO's series 'Entourage' had a Mattherhorn movie used as part of the plot...

With his latest film "Head On" about to hit screens across the country, actor Vince Chase is living the player's life in L.A. Along for the ride are his best friends: Eric and Turtle, who grew up with him in Queens, and Vince's brother, Johnny Drama. The crew spends most of their time relaxing at Vince's house in the Hollywood hills, shooting hoops, playing rooftop golf and entertaining ladies at the pool. But to keep the lifestyle going, Vince has to keep making movies, and his super agent Ari thinks he's found just the project, the action film "Matterhorn."
a movie he describes as "Die Hard at Disneyland".

Ari calls and the guys find out that Colin Farrell took "Matterhorn". The guys seem concerned they made a wrong move by passing on it, and after Vince says, that Colin Ferrell is a good actor, he tells E that he hopes he knows what he's doing.

        It's gotta be better than Pirates 2, 3, 4 (and possibly) 5.

Hope that if the new features for Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and Matterhorn are actually good they don't run them into the ground like they did for Pirates.

        Hopefully ... but not likely.

As much I love the attraction, it's sounds like Entourage meets Beyond Survival with Les Stroud. I doubt this project will ever see daylight, just like the re-make of the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and the now doomed Maleficent.

It might as well be this...

"Ride based" movies are all well and good, and I'm trying to stay open-minded about the Favreau/Chabon "Magic Kingdom" thing. But what about the rich real-life history of these parks? I know it's out there. For example, couldn't tell you if there's an actual studio connection or not, but one of the folks I follow on Twitter (@ap_writer) posts often about a Disneyland movie that's set in 1954-55 Anaheim, as the park is being conceived and built. Super exciting stuff...I'd kill to see that era on screen!

That will definitely see daylight. There's so much information about it (and even a teaser) that why wouldn't it see daylight?

I think it sounds like a pretty good idea, btw.

The Matterhorn attraction was already inspired by a movie - Third Man on the Mountain. Why don't they just remake that film?
