  • Disney's far-flung Narnia - UK Observer- 12/4/05

    Full text available here:,00.html

For Andrew Adamson, director of the new Disney version of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, his homeland of New Zealand had the right cinematic, mythical quality for Narnia. If you'd rather make your Narnia pilgrimage there than to Lewis's Ulster, here's where to go.

The great battle was filmed at a place called Flock Hill, a dramatic plateau ringed by the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps about an hour and a half's drive from Christchurch on the South Island. It's privately owned, but in January, Canterbury Sightseeing (00 64 3 338 0982; will start day tours to the battlefield and other locations by jeep or helicopter. Further south is the other key location, Aslan's encampment, which was filmed at Elephant Rocks near Tokarahi outside the seaside town of Oamaru. It's a steep valley containing hundreds of unique rock formations and boulders (popular with rock climbers), where designer Roger Ford and his crew erected 80 tents, all handmade from silk designs manufactured in Auckland.
