  • Disney - Pixar deal rumor

This morning an ABC corespondent covering Wall Street reported that there is more talk of a Disney Pixar deal happening on wall street and the deal would likely include a partial sale of stock by Pixar to Disney... Disney would be then a minority owner of Pixar.

So far I haven't found a print story on this... It is likely in the Wall Street Journal, but I don't have a subscription to their website... I will see if I can confirm this story, and I will let you know as soon as I can.

I see the link in Yahoo!, but it is to WSJ. And I don't subscribe. Title implies that investors are getting anxious, but nothing of note from the companies themselves.

Sheesh, I wonder who speculates more, they or we?
            "Disney buying Pixar"?
That's my idea, possibly stolen from someone else.

It has been chatter for five years now... There isn't much hard news except the comment that talks are going much longer than both parties expected... likely because other issues keep popping up...

Clearly though, both want to make a deal happen if talks are going longer... The longer they go, I think the less leverage Disney has... Even though usually stalling is a tactic to see if the party can go lower...

It is still within the realm of possablity that Pixar could go elsewhere...

I can imagine a senario where Pixar could end up with NBC-Universal... As they are talking to Jobs regarding Apple iPod... Since they lost DreamWorks, they could be testing the waters in regards to Pixar...

Re: Disney - Pixar deal rumor

NBC-Uni-GE is probably the best place to go after Disney. It really uses the synergy of the parks in nearly all of their movies, if only short-term.
If Viacom's parks were not being sold, that would be another good partner.

But, there's nothing like having a 10-year-old movie with an attraction in Disneyland (and MK) and knowing that it will probably be there forever, with another attraction for a four-year-old movie about to open.

Disney is the perfect partner for family movies. Just have to work out the money part and the licensing part. Pixar needs to make it easy for Disney to make attractions based on the movies, since that helps both partners out.
I don't know if selling a piece of the company to Disney will happen, not as long as Eisner is the largest single shareholder. And if Disney were to buy Pixar, there is nothing stopping Pixar's creative team from simply creating a new company.
Disney really knows how to push the movies (Brad Bird singled this out at the Oscars last year), since there is a huge pot of money at the end. Take away the huge pot, and there's less incentive.

Re: Disney - Pixar deal rumor

I believe Disney already owns a 5% stake in Pixar under the origianl 3 picture deal that they had.

First off I am not a legal person, but I would bet that everyone under contract to Pixar has in there contract that they just can not leave and start another company that does the same thing. Now when there contract is up that could be another story.
