    He's been a movie star for quite a while. Now he's a legit triple threat.
    Clooney says he's being offered scripts to direct with no acting strings attached. "That is what I want to do. It's all about longevity."USA TODAY
    But Oscar golden boy George Clooney didn't spend the day toasting his good luck after grabbing nominations for supporting actor (as a pudgy CIA operative in Syriana) and for director and co-writer of the Edward R. Murrow bio Good Night, and Good Luck, which also is a best-picture candidate.
    Instead, he was in Los Angeles shooting a French coffee commercial. What? The guy's hurting for cash? "For a couple of days' work, I'm being paid more than I've made for the last year and a half," he says while explaining the need for cost-cutting on Syriana and Good Luck. "I made no money on those films. I worked as an actor for scale. There was no back-end money."
    Clooney doesn't necessarily gain industry clout after matching the trifecta previously achieved by Woody Allen (Annie Hall, 1977), Warren Beatty (Heaven Can Wait, 1978, and Reds, 1981) and Roberto Benigni (Life Is Beautiful, 1998). He has more than enough already. "I've been able to do anything I want for five or six years now."
    The real payoff: He's being offered scripts to direct with no acting strings attached. "That is what I want to do. It's all about longevity." Not that he is giving up on acting: "That is where I actually get paid," Clooney says. (He adds that Ocean's Thirteen is ready to go whenever the rest of the cast is.)
    One fellow nominee who is glad the actor has gone behind the scenes is Steven Spielberg, who declares that Clooney is "one of the funniest men I know."
    "We're very lucky that George has discovered the camera," the director of Munich says. "Now that camera can be an extension of the discussions all of us have had with George over the past 12 years. I think this is just the beginning of the next Costa-Gavras."
