    No tour for Britain's Gorillaz

LONDON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Britain's Grammy Award-winning Gorillaz, has had to scrap its plans for a world tour because of the high cost of creating the animated musicians.

The "virtual" band -- Murdoc, 2-D, Russel and Noodle -- appeared with Madonna on the Feb. 6 Grammy Awards broadcast and went on to chalk up an award for best pop collaboration with vocals.

Jamie Hewlett, who started the Gorillaz with Blur's Damon Albarn, told Contactmusic.com they found out it would cost more than $1.5 million to take the cartoon band on tour.

"We're just not gonna be able to do a proper tour," Hewlett said. "We've tried really hard to work out a way but the costs would be just astronomical."

And if I post my thoughts on the situation and the band, I'd probably get a :mob:.

But, hey... at least the cartoon design of the band is kinda cool.

If they can't tour as a cartoon band, then freakin' tour as real people!

This night, Gorillaz themselves are real draw April 4, 2006

                    By Jim Farber

Mistakes and glitches can be a blessing in disguise. Consider the case of Gorillaz.
At the opening of the group's five-night run at the Apollo on Sunday, technical bugaboos felled a supposedly crucial part of the event. Screens designed to display the cartoon characters that represent the Gorillaz as a "virtual" band didn't function, which left the flesh-and-blood musicians to entertain us as an actual band.

For those who haven't followed the story so far: Gorillaz is a collaboration between Blur front man Damon Albarn and illustrator Jamie Hewlett. Albarn handles much of the music while Hewlett creates the characters in videos and other promotional lures. (Cute, eh?)
Yet at the Apollo, the actual Gorillaz proved so compelling, it left the cartoon aspect seeming like a distraction and marketing gimmick. As a happy result, we could finally hear how animated the band can be.

Damn! I love the Gorillaz! The bit they did at the MTV music awards was amazing, but I can understand how hard that would be to pull off via world tour. Still disappointing.

Gorillaz' Jamie Hewlett Gets Design Award

                          May 23, 2006

Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett has been named Britain's designer of the year for his groundbreaking animation for the virtual band.

Hewlett, who first earned fame for co-creating the comicstrip, TANK GIRL, won the award May 22, 2006, in a ceremony at the Design Museum. He was honored for conceiving the graphics, animation and "live" performances for the band, which is composed of four animated, fictional members.

The annual $47,000 prize honors the British or Britain-based designer who has made the biggest contribution to design in the past year.

Hewlett co-formed the Gorillaz with Blur singer Damon Albarn. The virtual band's albums include the self-titled, "Gorillaz," and "Demon Days."
