    Disney snares India 'Hanuman' rights

NEW DELHI -- Mumbai-based Walt Disney Television International India announced Wednesday that it has acquired telecast rights for "Hanuman," India's most successful animated film ever. "Hanuman," the story of the Indian monkey god as a child that grossed more than 70 rupees million ($1.6 million) in theatrical release, will be telecast on the Disney Channel over eight episodes in May. The film was produced by Sahara One Motion Pictures and Percept Picture Co. and directed by V. G. Samant. This marks Disney's first acquisition of local animation content. Rival Cartoon Network has showcased local product, such as 2002's "Ramayana," an Indo-Japanese co-production about Lord Rama. (Nyay Bhushan)
