  • MGM-CapitaLand ties up with Cirque du Soleil in integrated resort bid - Mediacorp

SINGAPORE : Bidders for the Marina Bay integrated resort are pulling out all their aces as the March 29 submission date for proposals draws near.

US-based MGM Mirage and Singapore developer CapitaLand unveiled their new tie-up with Cirque du Soleil, a day after famed director James Cameron pledged his allegiance to the Harrahs Entertainment-Keppel Land tie-up.

Cirque du Soleil's resident shows in Las Vegas like "Ka" and "O" have mesmerised many worldwide.

Massive staging and production work have made such shows impossible to tour.

And Singapore could very well be home to such shows should MGM Mirage and CapitaLand secure the Marina Bay integrated resort project.

Going by past records, the production cost for a show could hit US$35 million with up to US$120 million set aside to build the theatre.

"The design element, from the theatre design, costume, staging to the music written for the show and the choreography, all of that are individual and unique to each show and I wouldn't expect Singapore to be any less," said Jerry Nadal, GM of Resident Shows Division of Cirque du Soleil.

"99.5% of the people who come for our shows are visitors from some place else and a significant number of those come from the Far East. Cirque du Soleil shows are probably the most popular shows because there is no language barrier," said J. Terrence Lanni, Chairman & CEO, MGM Mirage.
