  • Disney Closes Unit Devoted to Pixar Sequels - Los Angeles Times, 3/21/06

The first casualty of Walt Disney Co.'s acquisition of Pixar Animation Studios came Monday when the Burbank entertainment giant shuttered a computer animation unit created to make sequels to such Pixar hits as "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo."

Thirty-two employees, or nearly 20% of the 168 artists, production managers and support staff, were told they would lose their jobs effective May 26.

The remaining 136 will be absorbed into Disney's feature animation division and redeployed to work on such productions as "Meet the Robinsons," "Rapunzel" and "American Dog."

This is interesting news. I wonder if they will move them to other design locations or just fire them like the did with traditional animatores just a few years ago. If so, it appears Disney will be "outsourcing" it's animation to another company. This by the company that was once the NAME in animation. Interesting how things change.

I'm surprised that this took so long. I know that they stopped production on Toy Story III as soon as the Pixar merger was completed. Since Pixar is now part of the company, they didn't need a department whose sole purpose is to make Pixar sequels.

I would like to see Disney continue to make traditional animated features as well, but I'm very happy to see the expert story tellers at Pixar in charge of Disney's animated future.
