Mickey Mouse denounced at Tokyo anime fair

TOKYO, April 2 (UPI) -- Tokyo's governor has condemned Mickey Mouse as inferior to Japanese anime, the highly detailed cartoons that feature busty girls with big blue eyes.
Shintaro Ishihara made the remark while opening the Tokyo International Anime Fair on Saturday, which saw tens of thousands of fans strolling aisles packed with anime books, art, posters and a myriad of other souvenirs.
"I hate Mickey Mouse," Ishihara said. "He has nothing like the unique sensibility that Japan has. The Japanese are inherently skilled at visual expression and detailed work."
Among awards given out, Dai Sato won best screenplay for "Eureka seveN," which chronicles the adventures of a teenage boy, a pilot girl named Eureka and a traveling group of mercenaries, The New York Times reported.

I bet Mickey has contributed quite well to Mr Ishihara's salary.

Okay, when an Anime figure can become a symbol for an entire country, a symbol of one of the biggest companies in the world and a character that is loved by billions (as well as consisitently being one of the top 5 selling brands in the world (as well as consistently topping (or coming 2nd behind pooh) the Forbes Top Earning Characters list), I'll accept that comment. Until then, I'll just laugh at it.

WOAH! I think someone is going to get a knock on his door on Monday morning reminding him about tourist dollars!

Mickey is DIFFERENT than anime, just as action films aren't better than comedy films. Just because they are the same medium doesn't mean they can be compared!

Compared to Anime, Mickey and friends are just American junk. Americans are not terribly picky.

I actually like American animation over Anime because their movements are life like and they look like normal individuals. But i like Anime because of their type of character details.

A bit interesting since, if it weren't for Mickey Mouse, anime wouldn't exist. He needs to be thanking Mickey. It's true, you know. Everything that we know of what makes the anime style was created because the early Manga artists were wanting to emulate the Disney style, but adapted for a unique Japanese style.

I mean, look at Astroboy. The rounded features, the big, pie eyes? Very Mickey-influenced. That kind of stuff is probably one reason why Oswald is so big in Japan.

Actually it seems that Japanese art has always been different from American. So I don't think that Mickey Mouse can be completely credited to the creation of Anime .

It has always been different, but like I said. Anime is based very heavily on the Disney art style.

Example from Wikipedia's entry on Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astroboy, Kimba, and Metropolis:

His prolific output and his pioneering techniques and genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga" and "the god of manga." The distinctive "large eyes" style of Japanese animation (anime) was invented by Tezuka, who based it on cartoons of the time such as Betty Boop by Max Fleischer and Mickey Mouse by Walt Disney.
In fact, the whole anime process was based on Disney animation:

Osamu Tezuka adapted and simplified many Disney animation precepts to reduce the budget costs and number of frames in the production, though it should be noted that Disney films made in the west are not anime. This was intended to be a temporary measure to allow him to produce one episode every week with an inexperienced animation staff. Anime studios have since perfected techniques to draw as little new animation as possible, using scrolling or repeating backgrounds, still shots of characters sliding across the screen, and dialogue which involves only animating mouths while the rest of the screen remains absolutely still, a technique familiar to Western animation. The overall effect of these techniques, such as reduced frame rate, several still shots and scrolling backgrounds, has led some critics to accuse anime of choppiness or poor quality in general. (See also limited animation.)
You see? Anime has a lot to thank Disney for. Osamu Tezuka pretty much set many of the standards that Anime and Manga continue to be based on and he based that on Disney. Most Anime histories will point to Disney moreso than Fleischer.

....ooooooohhh.... That is very interesting. Hey wasn't Osamu also nick-named the Japanese "Walt disney"?

I think you're thinking of Hayao Miyazaki. He's the one that did Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, etc. And judging from his hands-on approach to all Ghibli films, I'm saying that's a fair nickname.

I don't mind the guy praising Anime. After all, he is a Japanese politician at an Anime fair. I completely disagree with him, but I don't see anything wrong with him saying that. But to say "I hate Mickey Mouse" is just downright dumb of him to say. How many jobs & tourism money does Mickey Mouse make for Tokyo? Who is the most important character in all of animation? And the way he said it, he was basically saying "Japanese art is better than everything else. Anything that doesn't remotely look like anime is ugly."
