New Line has snapped up Craig Titley's pitch for an updated version of Jule Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and set it up with Sam Raimi and Josh Donen through their Buckaroo production company, says Variety.

The deal doesn't include a directing component for the "Spider Man" franchise helmer. New Line is developing the project as a film that would look more closely into the background of Captain Nemo as well as that of his prisoners aboard the Nautilus.

Disney's original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, released in 1954, starred James Mason, Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre in the story of a 19th century expedition to find a mysterious sea creature that's been attacking ships.

This could turn out to be very cool, visually. Raimi has an odd eye for visual effects. Disney should hold off on the sub overlay, and steal some of the visuals from the new film instead!

But the two real questions are - Will Elfman be doing the music, and who do we think Bruce Campbell will be in the film?

But pity the warrior who has slain all his enemies.

Depending on who he hires to direct, could be very cool. Bruce should be the squid, or a shark.

LOL!! He'll probably end up being some bit part crew member... Poor Bruce, always shrugged off to tiny parts. I'd love to see him in a decent sized role. Raimi is a lifelong friend, after all...

^ a publicist at Paramount once told me that "in Hollywood, cameo is the sincerest form of flattery..."

If that's true, Bruce is the most flattered man in Hollywood!
