'Cars' cruises to big boxoffice finish with $62.8 million

    By AP

The animated comedy "Cars" raced to first place at the weekend box office with a $62.8 million debut, maintaining the Disney-Pixar cartoon brand's undefeated record with a seventh straight hit.

If the numbers hold when final figures come out Monday, "Cars" would have the third-best opening in the Disney-Pixar cartoon series, just ahead of "Monsters, Inc." but behind "The Incredibles" and "Finding Nemo," which both debuted at about $70 million.

Still, it was the first time since the partnership began with 1995's "Toy Story" that a Disney-Pixar film did not gross more than its predecessor over opening weekend.

Impressive, but we will probablly hear complaints from certain people that the feature was a failure beacause it didn't break 75 million. Typical that people would call it a failure.

Expectations are funny. Here you could have a first place movie but labeled a failure because you did not do MORE than the last movie.

No all things are equal. Today we have gasoline at more than $3 a gallon. People have less money to spend on entertainment and the whole movie industry has noticed this. More animation movies are released this year than ever (I believe that will be 26 this year!!). It is also on a non-holiday weekend. I think that Cars will have a very good run and probably do as well as the other Pixar movies, even adjusted for inflation.

I saw it today. It was cute. It had it's good parts and it's really slow parts. I will probably enjoy it more once the DVD comes out. I don't really like going to theaters. To many distractions...LOL
