  • Mouse ears get new looks - Orange County Register, 6/30/06

For the July Fourth hat, a saluting Mickey stands in front of the American flag. Disney modeled another one after the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, which arrives in theaters next Friday. A red scarf with a skull and crossbones wraps around the cap, and a gold ring pierces one mouse ear.

So far, the company has sold about 500,000 fashion and seasonal hats. And customers bought about 1 million golden mouse ears, which surpassed the black ears and became the No. 1 selling souvenir.

At $11.50, the golden mouse ears sell for $4 more than the classic black style that was inspired by a 1929 cartoon where Mickey kicked his ears to Minnie. And the seasonal and fashion pieces run from $11.50 to $14.50.
As long as Disney feels that consumers want different mouse ears, it will churn out new ones, Sharpe said.

New designs could include characters from Pixar, which Disney bought in April.

I like the variety. I don't like all the ears they come out with, but this way, there's a set of ears for everyone .

Wow. I mean don't get me wrong, I do love the new ears. But it almost makes me wanna wear the black ears - just to be different!

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...
