In 2003's Pirates of the CaribbeanDead Man's Chest, expected to be the biggest hit of summer
Coming off the phenomenon of the first Pirates, which took in $654 million worldwide and earned Depp an Oscar nomination, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer felt they had to raise the bar in outrageousness for the sequel.

    And after the original Pirates

As good as the early buzz is, why does this comment scare me?

    Jerry Bruckheimer . . . 'nuff said.

I just hope racheting up the visual effects and stunts doesn't kill the story. That's the peril of most sequels.

It's a tough call - damed if you do (raise the stakes w/ bigger budget, effects, stunts - just top yourself at every turn ) or damed if you don't (just repeat the formula with minimal effort).

Can't really win on all fronts either way, except at the box office.

Here's some of the early reactions - read at your own peril of course:

Hmmm ... Not sure about those reviews although I think this one is going to be rather "Review proof".

There is a reason they are called Critics.

More early buzz. Rotten Tomatoes is at 68% with only 19 reviews so far:

I agree SC, this movie is absolutely critic proof.

Why am I now extremely excited to see this new logo? And why are they changing the classic logo after so many years? Hmm... Innnteresting.
