Hollywood Film Festival to honor Affleck

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The Hollywood Film Festival is set to honor Ben Affleck with its annual supporting actor of the year award.
Daily Variety said that in addition to recognizing Affleck's performance in the film "Hollywoodland," the annual film festival will bestow its film preservation trophy to the nonprofit group, the Film Foundation, on Oct. 23 at California's Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The 34-year-old Affleck, who won an Academy Award for his screenwriting talents in "Good Will Hunting," is currently directing the film "Gone, Baby, Gone," which he also wrote.

The paper said that since being established in 1990, the Film Foundation has funded film preservation and restoration through the efforts of co-founders Woody Allen, Robert Altman, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

The "Hollywoodland" star takes best actor at the film fest.
    From the Associated Press
    September 11, 2006

VENICE, Italy -- Ben Affleck, who has been working to get back on track an acting career that's been sidelined by his romance with Jennifer Lopez as well as his choices in film projects, got a vote of approval Saturday at the Venice Film Festival.

Affleck was named best actor for his starring role in Allen Coulter's "Hollywoodland," which dramatizes an investigation into the death of George Reeves, star of the 1950s TV series "The Adventures of Superman."

Helen Mirren was named best actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Stephen Frears' "The Queen," which also took the festival's prize for best script.

The Golden Lion award, the Venice festival's top honor, went to the Chinese movie "Still Life," a surprise entry set against the backdrop of China's gigantic Three Gorges Dam project. Directed by Jia Zhang-ke, "Still Life" was a late entry in the festival and ended up trumping candidates that included Emilio Estevez's film "Bobby," about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, and "The Queen," which explores the days that followed the death of Princess Diana.

Hollywood loves a good comeback. I've always thought Affleck's a good actor, especially in his earlier work with Kevin Smith. His problem was he made some very questionable role choices (Gigli anyone?) and allowed his personal life to get more press than his acting career (something that hardly ever happens in the entertainment business ).

I've yet to see Hollywoodland, but it's getting great reviews and it's definitely on my "must see" list.
