Phoenix is back for another movie review, and it looks like I'm the first to do one for this film. 
Surprisingly, this film was at the top of the box office this past weekend earning ONLY $9 million in the #1 spot followed by the new release of Hollywoodland with Adrian Brody and Ben Affleck at $6 million, dethroning the previous champ Invincible with Mark Walberg earning just $5.8 million. This is also not suprising, because after the big Summer movies have all come and gone, there is practically nothing out right now and most fans are waiting for the horror movies to be coming out like the new Texas Chainsaw, Saw 3, and the Grudge 2. Speaking of which, we saw the trailer for the Grudge 2, and it totally blew one spoiler away in it.
Anyways, on to the movie. This one is basically like a male version of The Craft with Neve Campbell and Robin Tunney. Matter of fact, scary enough is that one of the characters in the film looks like Nick of BSB lol. This film could even be said as the dark teenage version of Harry Potter, which they even make a reference to the wizard in the film. Those that like magic or perhaps know a bit of history might be into this film. Spoiler Ahead!
The film didn't do a whole lot for me. I did like the scenery though. The "eye candy" was nice, but also there was a lot of nice country shots of the area of the New England states showing some nice fall colors which made me think it would be nice to live out there sometime, despite the cold winters. And also because the early U.S. colonial history always interested me. I've been back there before, though very quickly through Boston and most of Mass because of being chased around by a hurricane and this was in 1985. And I would very much like to go back. Aside from the reference to colonial history, I also like that it has magic in the story, but the story lacks plot. It would've been nice to see more involvement with the other 3 guys aside from it just being centered around Caleb in the story. There was one distant female booty shot, a lot of male butt shots in the locker room scene. (Which made me thank God for steam, but had to wipe off Becka's chin a few times! lol) A few panty shots with the main girls in the film, but no nudity or sexual scenes. So I'd say it's partially safe for young ones. The spider scene, a lil creepy so if you have intense acrachnaphobia, close your eyes or don't see the film. I give this movie a 2 & 1/2 flames out of 5, for the lack of plot & story, but the decent eye candy (and I'm talking about the girls, mind you! lol) and nice scenery. There is another thing that I do like about this film. It is all about fresh young faces. There was a completely new and young cast, no one recognizable. The only person in the film to really have any significant screen time and have a movie history, is the actress Wendy Crewson from Santa Clause 2 & 3, who played Caleb's mom in the film. But one thing to say about this one.

The film is generally about 4 male teens, from four families dating back to the Salem Witch trials days back when the country was first colonized. The four guys are from a secret covenant who no one in the town or the school they attend know about. Some of the students know of the history of the Ipswich colony but have no idea that four male witches walk amongst them. The four guys have magical powers that they can use at their will, but though they're not fully developed, they can become very addicting if used too much. One that appears to be the oldest & the one that keeps them in line is Caleb who is turning 18 and is the center of affection with the new girl in school named Sarah. But when Caleb is going to turn 18, he is supposed to "Ascend" to where his powers increase and be basically becomes a full witch, aside from becoming an adult. A new student comes to the school named Chase and soon bonds with Caleb. But not all appears right with the new guy. When one student mysteriously dies and another is mysteriously bitten by dozens of spiders, Caleb and the others begin to suspect something is up and their attention soon turns to the new guy. It turns out that Chase is the ancestor of the "" son of John Putnam (of Salem Witch fame) and is the one that can ruin it all. He wants Caleb and his powers and he was the one that killed the one student and puts the other one in a spell where she is bitten by dozens of spiders. She just happens to be the girlfriend of one the guys, Pogue (who was recently in Snakes on a Plane). He goes after Chase but is taken out as we see just how powerful he really is and show that Pogue is just the bait to get to Caleb. Chase of course has it out with Caleb, wanting him to "will" him his powers on his birthday so that he can become even more powerful, regardless of the fact that the addictive powers suck the age and youth right out of you. And Caleb, who does not want to give them up aside from the fact that Chase will be even more dangerous, but once he does will them his new fully generated powers, he basically dies because they're a part of him. So I don't think I need to tell you what happens here. The guy basically gets a cool birthday present, defeats the bad guy, and saves the girl that had the hots for him. Though, at the end, no one could find the body of Chase, leaving to wonder what happened to him. Leaving me to think they just left a hook for a sequel, if that ever happens.
