New Disney Bio Scheduled for Release on October 31st

This fall, Knopf will release a new biography of Walt Disney that promises to delve into his complex psychological makeup while celebrating his place as an iconic 20th century genius.

Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination will follow Disney from his modest upbringing in the American midwest to the challenges he faced finding success in Hollywood to his eventual creation of the entertainment empire that included Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi and Disneyland.

Author Neal Gabler spent seven years researching the book, during which time he was given unlimited access to the Disney archives. Besides detailing and documenting the many innovations Disney brought to animated and live action films, television and amusement parks, Gabler will explore the personality of this "wounded, lonely, and often disappointed man," who once suffered a nervous breakdown and was prone to periods of depression and seclusion that flew in the face of his public persona. Gabler will also investigate the darker accusations of Disney's life: that he was a "red-baiter," an anti-Semite and an alcoholic.

Gabler's previous books include An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood and Winchell: Gossip, Power and the Culture of Celebrity, both award winners.

Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination runs 880 pages and will be released in hardcover on October 31st.
