Disney to be first movies available on iTunes

Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes Music Store is throwing its hat into the ring of online movies, announcing that films from the various properties of the Walt Disney Co. will be available to download through Apple's new iTunes 7 software.

The availability of the movies was announced during Apple's "It's Showtime" press event Tuesday. With the new version of iTunes, 75 movies from Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, and Miramax will be available for downloading.

Most of the titles will cost $9.99 to download. New releases will be $12.99 on pre-orders and the first week, jumping to $14.99 after that.

Movies will be at the same resolution as the television shows available on iTunes. At the event, Apple announced it is increasing the resolution from 320x240 to 640x480. It is estimated that on a 5MB Internet connection, a movie will take 30 minutes to download.
