Survivor: Cook Islands! SPOILERS Ahead!

The season premieres tomorrow, so I thought it was time for this season's thread! :yea:

I know that this season's opening is controversial, but I think it's ingenious! Separating the tribes by race might be risky, but it has made me more interested in Survivor than I have been in a long time. I think a lot of people felt the same way, so they definitely needed a new "hook." I can't wait to see it play out.

Is anyone else as excited as me? Season premiere tomorrow, Thurs 9-14, 8/7 central!

It will probably be about as pointless as seperating people by age last season. What they were seperated for all of a week? I see the whole race thing as a ploy to boost ratings. I will watch the show but I never expect their "never been done before" hoo-ha to change the game much.

I havent watched the last couple seasons of Survivor because it just became.....boring to me. But, Im willing to give it another shot this time around.

Yes, I'm super excited and anxious to see how this racial split pans out. I've already read a few spoilers but have scaled back a bit. I'm spending most of my spoiling time on LOST.

In some ways I understand the controversy, but in other ways I don't. What is the difference between this time, separating by race, and other years when they separated by age and sex? Isn't all along the same lines?

I agree that it is going to be for a totally short time, I am sure they'll mix them up really soon. But I think that the just the suggestion to the Survivors of playing with their race will last with them all season. So just because it will openly not last very long, I feel like people will be more loyal to their original tribes this time around than they were to the people in their age or sex group. We'll see. I think it will be really interesting.

It looks really interesting to me. Did anyone watch the preview show or whatever from last week? It was really good. The contestants seem extremely interesting to me, so I'm excited to get this season underway.

My initial reaction to the show playing the race card was negative. However I've mellowed with time. In watching some of the re-runs on OLN I've come to the conclusion that's it's not about the tribes, the twists or the challenges, it's all about the people. I'll watch the first episode or two and if I get attached I'll watch (like with Stephine's first season) and if I don't (like last season) I won't. Right now I'm wondering if they took the most interesting people they could find or because they needed to fill the various race based tribes they has to settle a bit.

Oh man, I didn't even know about it. I would have watched it too since I am in a lull between my summer shows ending and my fall shows starting. Luckily that waiting ends this week with Survivor and my favorite The Amazing Race starting on Sunday! :yea:

It's all about the people on Survivor for me as well. The Amazing Race, on the other hand, is equally about the people and the travel. That's what happens when you were a Psychology major, I guess.

So, I just got done watching the first episode. It was, um, interesting. There were a few times I was flinching at the things people were saying. My fiance had a pretty funny quip during the show:

Jeff Probst: "It is a social experiment unlike any other."
Finace: "What? Segregation!?"
Me: BWAH!

The difference is people get a TON more emmotional about racial highlighting then they do over age or sex.

How many riots or wars have you seen started over age or sex discrimination?

Sure, but it still is technically the same thing.

I understand the emotional aspect, but when you think about it rationally, I don't see a difference.

I found the first episode interesting. I cringed when that girl gave a cheers to the "whities" but then I realized that is something I would have said too, in a joking manner. I wouldn't take it seriously, but I wondered how other viewers felt about it.

So far I like the Asian team best. They seem to have it all together! And my least favorite are the caucasion team! And I am a whitie!

Interesting to see how they automatically split themselves down the gender line already. So maybe this will pan out to be an entertaining season after all. I think they are all going in understanding the "social experiment" aspect of the show, so that helps.

Meh, it's always hard to tell the first episode or two of a new season. We will see how the personalities play out. Right now there are just too many people.

I have to agree, it's always easier after a few go home and you know the rest better. But, so far, the Asian team is my favorite, too. And I'm sorta Asian. :lol:

I really liked the episode and so far didn't have anyone stand out that I just hated. Cao Boi was quite interesting, he's kinda like a cross between Bruce and Aras from last season. The guy he pinched all up on the head took that quite well, walking around with hickey forehead for a few days.

Did anyone else think the guy that got sent to Exile Island sounded like Ray Ramano? Everytime he'd speak, I'd picture Ray in my head and be surprised when I'd realize it was some other guy.
