Whitney Houston has split from her husband, Bobby Brown, Houston's rep, Nancy Seltzer, has confirmed to PEOPLE.
"She has filed for divorce from Bobby Brown," says Seltzer.
Houston filed the paperwork Friday, Sept. 8 in Orange County, Calif.
The filing is technically a legal separation, Seltzer clarified, adding: "We're saying she filed for divorce because that is (Whitney's) intent." Divorce proceeding are expected to begin next month.
"(Whitney) was in L.A. last night with Clive Davis at the Ella awards," Seltzer says. "I have nothing further to add."
A Houston friend tells PEOPLE of the singer, "She is doing fabulously well."
Houston, 43, and Brown, 39, wed on July 18, 1992. They have one daughter, Bobbi Kristina, 13.
Doubts about the couple began even before their wedding day. She was the velvet-voiced sweetheart raised on Baptist gospel music in a middle-class home. He was a bad boy from the Roxbury section of Boston who had fathered three kids out of wedlock. Still, Houston walked down the aisle in a $40,000 Marc Bouwer wedding gown and, before a star-studded crowd of 800 guests, exchanged vows with Brown on the grounds of her five-acre, $11 million New Jersey mansion.
Their marriage had its share of ups and downs, including a month-long separation in 1997, run-ins with the law, rumors of drug use and infidelity and a 2005 Bravo reality show, Being Bobby Brown, that showcased a relationship many viewers perceived as bizarre.
But through it all, Houston and Brown always seemed to stick together. In January, a report surfaced that Brown planned to divorce Houston and had been partying with several women at a casino. Telling PEOPLE the rumors were untrue, Brown said of his wife, "She's my friend. She's the better half of me. They say opposites attract, but we're not opposites. We're one person. We're loving life, and we're just trying to be as good to each other as possible."
And in May, when a tabloid reported that Houston was abusing drugs and that the union was in trouble, Brown told PEOPLE, "We are happily married. ... We are going to stand for each other for as long we live. I adore that woman. She helps me see God. I look in her eyes and I see God.""If you don't know how to draw, you don't belong in this building" - John Lasseter 2006

Of course, now will come the rehab, the book, and the appearance on Oprah. I guess Whitney will be just fine.

Maybe this is what she needs to get back to where she was. She was a superstar before Bobby Brown - I feel like he just dragged her down into his muck. She was such a humble young lady at one time...and then in these more recent interviews like with Diane Sawyer, she's like whacked out majorly!
Hopefully this is the REHAB she needs.

I suspect she was one. Bobby was just that big an infuence in her life. Sadly she allowed his negative infuence to drag her down. While many make bad choices all on thier own, many tend to follow what they see going on around them. Never underestimate the effects of a negative infuence in one's life. It has brought bigger people than her down. Your right about the rehab and eventual book and Oprah thing though.

Re: Whitney Houston Files for Divorce . . .
the problem is she has no career or life. she can't sing thanks to the drugs and I really wonder about her judgement at times. the one i worry about most is her daughter and the hell she has gone through growing up with those two as parents

It's unfortunate that her career and life turned to such crap after marrying that guy. I really don't think she would have gotten into drugs if it wasn't for him.
It'll be interesting to see if she can make a comeback. "America loves a come back story".

It's about time!!! I was wondering if they were going to get divorced, or just stay married and have a totally dishonest relationship.Press today is so concerned with cool vs. not cool that they're starting to forget good vs. bad. I'm not sure I'll ever be "cool", but I will always tirelessly strive to be "great". - Josh Groban

Isn't that the truth my heart goes out to her more than either of them. I can't imagin what it has been like to have thoughs 2 as my parents. Makes me glad I had the parents I did.

I for one am rooting for her, she was a beautiful talented woman and had a voice that few are blessed with. The picture on people.com of her and her cousin Dione Warwick and Clive Davis is hopefully the direction she is going with the help of family and friends she can pull herself up and hopefully her daughter will once again meet the woman she once was.

Re: Whitney Houston Files for Divorce . . .
but...they were such a perfect couple together! I agree with DisneyTim, Whitney didn't do anything she didn't want to with him. She threw it all away on her own.
I can just picture an SNL/ MAD TV skit of the divorce hearing with someone pretending to be her singing "I have nothing"
