  • Did airport security attempt to steal the manuscript for Harry Potter book 7?

    From http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/story?id=2432619&page=1

British author J.K. Rowling says she won an argument with airport security officials in New York to carry the manuscript of the final "Harry Potter" book as carryon baggage.

Had security agents not relented, she said on her Web site, she might not have flown, she said in a posting dated Wednesday.

"I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't. Sailed home probably," she wrote.

The author had participated in a book reading for charity on Aug. 1 with fellow writers Stephen King and John Irving. Security was drastically tightened after Aug. 10 when British police said they had intercepted a plot to blow up U.S.-bound airliners.

"The heightened security restrictions on the airlines made the journey back from New York interesting, as I refused to be parted from the manuscript of book seven.

"A large part of it is handwritten and there was no copy of anything I had done while in the U.S."

Eventually, she added, "They let me take it on, thankfully, bound up in elastic bands."

Rowling said she was still considering two possible titles for the last of the boy wizard's adventures.

"I was quite happy with one of them until the other one struck me while I was taking a shower in New York," she wrote.

"They would both be appropriate, so I think I'll have to wait until I'm further into the book to decide which one works best."
    Growing older is manditory
    Growing up is however, optional

since when does a stack of paper look threatening? Especially when it's being held by J.K. Rowling...whatever. Interesting story

      (I hate to type this)

Well, if the book isn't as good as we all expect, it could be considered a bomb.

      (insert rim shot here)

      In other thoughts:
Holy crap! Handwritten?? No copies?? Not one?? Get thee to a Kinkos!!

I'm still conjuring the title she thought up while in the shower:

"Harry Potter and the Insidious Loofah"

Oh, for Heavan's sake. This smells like a pure PR stunt for sure. Only copy, handwritten, elastic bands...?

Yeah, those books sure do need it.

From what I read, the written portion was what she wrote while she was in the states. I assume most of it's already written/typed. Always room for a plot twist, a false lead, a completely different ending....

From what I understand, that even though she knows the basic outline since she began the books, she is still writing the last book. About two months ago she announced that she may kill Harry at the end of book seven to keep anyone else from using him as a character in other books. She has stated that lead characters will die in this book.

Shortly after this announcement, while at an event where she was presented to the Queen, it is rummored that Queen Elizabeth asked to not to kill Harry. I'm not sure if that part is true but I do know the story of Harry's death triggered quite an upheaval in the Potter world.

And as to security trying to stop the book from going onboard, it was not the paper but the elastic bands. No one wants to be hit with one of those; they hurt!

Oh please, half her fans are EXPECTING it! It's JK Rowling, she pulls no punches.

Of course... just as easy to kill Ron, eh?

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Popular characters have already died in the books. That was already expected.
Harry might die. Might not die. I thinkl if she would have stated one way or the other, it would diminish sales more than embiggen them.
She stated some time ago that she had changed her mind about three characters: two who were going to live will die, and one she had killed off will now not be.
