Disney in New York

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are going to New York City for one day in October. We are getting a babysitter to watch the kids. We will arrive in the morning and will have all day to shop and then the evening to see a show before we leave the next morning. We love Disney and I love to shop, so this will be a shopping trip only, no tourist sites like the Empire State Building. We will try to hit the Disney Store, Toys R Us and Fao Swartz (sp?). Is there any other stores we need to hit?

Also, we plan on seeing a show if we can. I have seen Beauty many times but never on Broadway and I hear that Donny Osmond is now Gaston. I am not interested in Mary Poppins or The Lion King (saw that when it came to Pittsburgh). I have heard bad things about Tarzan but I have the Broadway soundtract and love the music. So, any advice about what to see? Any advice on where to have a nice dinner as well?

We have a hotel picked out. It is a Hilton but I don't know where in the city it is. My babysitter actually got us a great deal. My husband has been to the city a few times and is comfortable with the subways. So we don't mind travelling around if you all have some good suggestions. Thanks everyone!

Ahh, shopping in NYC, is there no better locale?

I'd prefer to EAT while in NYC, but that's just me.

Yes, hit up the Disney Store--it's over on Fifth Avenue...home to a bevy of shops that are wonderful to browse through. I mean, it is FIFTH AVENUE.

Another store to look at? Try hitting up MACY'S! It's right off of Herald Square and a true New York Original. Don't plan on going in? Take a look at the windows out front. Those are an attraction to themselves.

When you hit up Toys 'R' Us, you'll be in Times Square, so even if you didn't want to see attractions, you'll do so. There's a ferris wheel (small, for kiddies) inside there, ya know. But there's also some fun, rare finds. Take a look at the HERSHEY STORE and the Viacom building's MTV STORE. Both are a bit small, considering what they are peddling, but still fun.

One of the great things about NYC? Great food on the go!

Did you think I'd let you escape without mentioning food in the Big Apple? If you see something you like or have the munchies---a corner hot dog is so cheap and, heck, Kosher! Yes, we call them 'dirty water dogs,' but still--an NYC tradition that won't hold you up.

My youngest brother is NYPD and works transit. So be good if you take the subway! I was raised on Long Island.

I see three/four Hiltons here directly in the City. Which one are you staying at?

The World of Disney is really nice, and it will probably take you a little while to shop there, though I was disappointed that there wasn't more NY-specific merchandise.

The Toys R Us is amazing - lots of stuff to look at. The ferris wheel was fun to watch - look at all the themed cars on it. There's a huge animatronic T-rex in one section as well. That was really awesome.

Warning if you don't already know - FAO Schwartz is a shell of what it used to be. Still has some nice stuff, but the decor has been totally stripped. I was so sad to hear about that a few years ago.

I'll second going to the Hershey store. That was really cool.

I saw "Tarzan" in May, and I really enjoyed it. There were very specific points that I didn't care for, but overall, I had a great time, and Josh (Tarzan) and Jenn (Jane) are amazing.

We'd seen "The Lion King" a few times before but really wanted to see it on Broadway and specifically at the New Amsterdam, and it was definitely an experience. Since they've moved to a different theatre, I'm not sure what it's like, but I'm sure it's still a great show.

Not Disney related, but we love "Mamma Mia", and we saw it at the Cadillac Winter Garden. Absolutely fabulous cast all around.


We had dinner at Thalia after seeing "The Lion King", and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Great service and great food. It's a few blocks north of the main theatre district.

I also forgot to add you can take picture with characters on the 3rd floor.

And you'll see a large statue of Goofy, Cruella Deville

Have a great time. All depending on what Hilton you are staying at, if you are staying at the Hilton on 6th ave and 53rd- you are but walking distance to the world of Disney on 5th ave (and I work in the building next door ) As for shows- I hated the Lion King, loved Beauty, and I don't want to see Tarzan. Ff you are limiting yourself to Disney shows- but if not- than there are other great shows. Phantom and Chicago are some of my all time favorites. Definetly hit Macy's for shopping. Also walk down 5th- there is about everything store to look at. Toys r us in Times Square is a definete must see- They have the animated T-Rex and a huge barbie section. I don't care for FAO anymore - very dissapointing, but right there is also the new Apple store.

First of all, WHEN in October? This little Piglet will be in New York in that month to visit the yoyo.

I would say that if you like the Tarzan music, then to go for it. I really enjoyed it.

As far as dining goes - you should ask ron10036. He lives in the city and he knows lots of great places. When I went to NYC we met up with him and he took us over to Hells Kitchen for dinner and it was great. It was nice to get away from all the tourism aspects for a while and see the nice city.

what to see on Broadway? The Producers and Spamalot are both excellent shows, I would definitely recommend either of them. Also, Tarzan is very interesting, and BPF loved it! Make sure you let me know when you're going, since I'm just a short train ride away, if you'd like. Wouldn't mind hitting up the WOD again.

Beauty creaks, and Donny is miscast as Gaston...he'd be a much better Lumiere or even Beast.

If you don't want to see Mary Poppins, which is one of THE shows to see this season, and you don't want to see Tarzan, I'd definitely recommend spending your money on a non-Disney show. Phantom is in great shape, an exciting new production of Les Miserables is opening this fall, a thrilling new revival of A Chorus Line is just about to open, and Hairspray, which is phenomenal, is in great shape as well. Martin Short's new musical just opened, and it is beyond hysterical (but you have to like his humor). There's so much to see on Broadway, and so much of it is truly better than Beauty and the Beast, which has not aged gracefully.

It sounds like you have a good plan! I am a new yorker myself so I have done all of that jazz.

Now for broadway shows, I have seen most. I am going to see mary Poppins in October. But as for beauty and the beast, it is AMAZING. I would say go see that. Lion King and Tarzan were okay, but beauty is the best.

As for non disney broadway, I would say Wicked, The Producers, Spamalot or Mama Mia.

Oh my god im so jealous for you! I got back from NYC ( I live in California) about a month ago, it was my first time and I loved it SOOO much!
I personally think you should see the producers on broadway. If you are looking for a Disney themed broadway show i'd reccomend Beauty ( i know you've seen it).
Also just a tip..go to the NBC Experience Store in the Rockefeller Center, at NBC Studios

Thanks everyone for all the great tips! My hubby and I will leave Pittsburgh the morning of October 6th. That's a Friday. We hope to all a lot of shops. I'm now thinking of Beauty. I saw it here in Pitt but my husband has not seen the Broadway version. I hope I can get tickets. This is just a short stay, we leave the next day. If anyone is in the area and would like to meet up, that would be great.
