Disney to buy British racing games developer
LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co. (DIS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is buying Britain's Climax Racing, its first European games acquisition, adding the maker of MotoGP and ATV Offroad Fury to expand its Buena Vista Games division outside the United States.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The companies said on Thursday they expect it to close in October.
Disney plans to develop new racing games with Climax, which developed MotoGP with THQ Inc. (THQI.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and ATV Offroad with Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, NEWS, Research).
"The acquisition of Climax Racing aligns perfectly with our strategic and geographic goals by allowing us to both reach into new genres and new markets for creative talent," said Graham Hopper, the senior vice president and general manager of Buena Vista Games, a unit of Disney's consumer products division.
"Adding Climax Racing to our creative family will provide an additional catalyst for our continued growth in the video games market," he added.
Climax Racing is based in Brighton, England, and employs about 100 programmers and designers. Buena Vista Games already operates development studios in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Salt Lake City, Utah.
Many of Buena Vista's games are centred around Disney characters, including Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Kim Possible and Chicken Little.
